iOS App of the Day: iHandy Flashlight Free

If you are looking for a fast, bright, and versatile flashlight app for your iPhone, then look no further. After spending a week combing through several flashlight apps (all claiming to be the best), I finally settled on keeping the iHandy Flashlight Free app for my iPhone. The app’s interface is sleek and extremely user-friendly. Each light effect has a quick preview or full screen viewing option and multiple color options to choose from. iHandy provides several other features outside of just your basic white light flashlight. For a free flashlight app iHandy Flashlight stands apart from the competition.

Pros:

  • Free
  • Helpful tutorial (found in settings)
  • Quickest and brightest flashlight: shake your iPhone/iPod touch to get instant full white screen
  • Cool lighting effects: Strobe, Trippy, Spiral, Emergency, Motion Control
  • Multi-color realistic glow sticks
  • Fully customizable colored lights with full range color picker
  • Adjustable brightness w/ indicator (just slide your finger up and down)
  • Easy navigation
  • Easy on battery life
Cons:
  • Pop up ads
  • Prompted to buy premium app frequently

How it works: After downloading the iHandy Flashlight app the dashboard appears with tiled options. To view a quick preview of an option simply tap on the tile and the tile flips to display a preview. Double tap on a tile and you can view the flashlight option full screen. Most of the options have more than one color feature, which you can swipe to the right or left to choose.

  • Lights provides a colored light option with a full color wheel to choose from
  • Strobe provides a flashing light option with various color options
  • S.O.S provides a flashing light in a morose code-like pattern. This is only available in a white and black flashing light
  • Emergency provides a flashing red, blue, and white light similar to what an emergency vehicle would have
  • Motion controlled provides a solid color of light. Shake your phone to change the color of the light
  • Spiral provides two different psychedelic spiral patterned light options
  • Glow Stick provides an image of a glow stick with six different color options
  • Neon provides a neon sign glow with an ” I heart NY” logo and a flashing neon heart
  • Trippy provides an alternating pattern of flashing colors
  • Settings option provides user with option to turn sounds on or off, use the Shake on Main Screen for flashlight, and includes instructions on how to navigate through app. The instructions are easy to follow and the images act as a helpful tutorial for first time users. This was a nice touch by the developer team.
Conclusion: iHandy Flashlight gives you more than just your basic LED flashlight. The added light effects, like strobe and trippy, provide fun and colorful options which made this app stand out for me. The intuitive interface was easy to navigate, and I like that with a single tap you can preview a flashlight option or double tap to view the full screen effect. Brightness of any effect can be adjusted by flicking up or down and you can always shake the main screen to access the default flashlight. This has saved me from many stubbed toes (when stumbling around my house in the dark) and has also acted as multi-purpose tool in random situations calling for a flashlight. Give iHandy Flashlight a try, and let us know what you think.
