iOS App of the Day: Sidecar.me

Have you ever wanted to share something instantly with someone as you were talking to them, but missed your moment? Sometimes life happens so quickly that it’s just not the same effect to send someone a photo or video clip after the fact. That’s all about to change with the new Sidecar.me app for iOS. Now using Sidecar’s “see what I see” features, you can share real-time videos, photos, and locations all while you are engaged in a phone call.

Pros:

  • Allows you to share with phone contact live videos, photos, and locations while you talk
  • Users can call non-Sidecar users for free anywhere in the US and Canada over Wi-Fi
  • New and exciting call experience
  • Call Sidecar users anywhere in the world for free: As long as both parties are using the Sidecar app, users can talk as long as they like for free
  • Send a private text message to another Sidecar user during a call, and keep the conversation going when it’s hard to talk

Cons:

  • iPhone 3GS not supported
  • Phone numbers with less than 10 digits not supported yet

How it works:

After you have downloaded the Sidecar app you can immediately start the service. Unlike FaceTime, Sidecar is not bound to one specific platform but both users will have to download the app.  If you do try to contact someone through the app who doesn’t have Sidecar, they will be sent an SMS prompting them to download the app. To share either a photo or video while talking to someone, simply tap the photo or video icon and the app will put you on speaker while it sends the photo or displays the real-time video to the person you are on the phone with. If you want to meet up with someone, you can share your location with them as you both look at an interactive map. Additionally, if talking is difficult at the moment you can “send a whisper” which displays as a text message to the other person while on the phone call.

Conclusion:

After using and falling in love with the Sidecar app for a few days now, I am tempted to start using it as my default phone app. The user interface is sleek, well designed, and easy to use with large icons. I love that Sidecar allows you to call anyone in the US or Canada for free and that this app is not tied to one platform. This app is perfect for truly staying connected with loved ones that are far away without the worry of racking up your phone bill with charges. Sidecar is one of the first apps I’ve fallen head over heels for so quickly, and I’m sure after you give it try you’ll feel the same way.
