iOS App of the Day: Viddy

With all the buzz surrounding the wildly successful photo sharing app, Instagram, it came as no surprise to see apps sprout up sporting the same concept. While Instagram allows its users to capture, apply trendy filters, and share photos what about all those video clips you have saved on your phone? That’s where Viddy comes in. Having your iPhone always on hand is the perfect way to capture video clips of those otherwise forgotten everyday moments. Viddy takes it one step further by offering creative features to turn those video clips into artistic mini-movies ready to be seen by the world.

Pros:

Social integration with Facebook, Twitter, or iPhone contacts
Easy to set-up and immediately start sharing with the Viddy community
Can like, comment, and tag other users in Viddy community
Choose from a variety of unique video effects (filters)
User can control how heavily a video effect is applied
User can mix an audio soundtrack on top of whatever audio you record with your video
User has ability to change their video description
Improved push notification support

Cons:

Video is limited to 15 seconds (just long enough for a short clip)
Can not edit after video has been uploaded to your profile
Video takes a few minutes to upload
Everything is done completely from your iOS device, no web interface

How it works:

You can capture a video directly from your iOS device and then upload it to the Viddy app. You can then apply any variety of “cinematic production packs”, or better known as filters or effects, to really enhance your video footage. Cinematic production packs include features like advanced camera exposure, focus, white balance, audio metering, the ability to add visual effects, transitions, and music. The free packs include the following filters: retro, glam, vintage, solarise, red, BW, exposed, junkd, 3D, and hued.

Once you’ve completed enhancing your video masterpiece the only thing left to do is share it with the massive Viddy community. What’s convenient is that Viddy offers a tight social integration Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, which makes it simple to share your video creation not only with the Viddy community but with all your favorite social networks. For any Instagram fans out there, Viddy sports an extremely similar interface making this app a smooth transition from the Instagram photo sharing world. One of the best aspects of Viddy is the community it offers, as you can either follow friends or find interesting users through the popular and trending sections.

Conclusion:

I had a great time with Viddy for iOS. The user interface is clean and overall a smooth ride. The video effect options turned my everyday videos into what I like to think of as small cinematic masterpieces. I loved that I could mix audio on top of the video clip and really enjoyed sharing my videos with the Viddy community. The social integration was painless and made it easy to share my “Viddys” with my entire social network. As Viddy for iOS is free the only thing you really stand to lose is time spent using the app.
