Microsoft Requests Import Ban On Several Motorola Smartphones, Claiming Patent Infringement
It would appear that Microsoft tore a page right out of Apple’s ‘litigation happy’ strategy, by filing a suit today against Google’s recently acquired Motorola Mobility. Microsoft presented the International Trade Commission with a claim that Motorola has infringed on seven of their patents, and as a result is requesting an import ban on several Motorola smartphones.
According to TechCrunch, Microsoft is citing very specific features that Motorola has allegedly copied into their smartphones. Outlined features include email synchronization, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and a way to alert applications of a change in signal strength and battery power. The Motorola smartphones in question are the Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq XT, Devour, Backflip, and the Charm.
Microsoft remains confident, stating that the ITC “will rule in its favor”, while according to Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Erikson, Motorola is “vigorously defending [itself] against Microsoft’s patent attack business strategy.”
An administrative law judge will release his findings and final conclusion to the public November 4th.
