New T-Mobile Plan in the Works?
So along with the news of the N900 maybe hitting T-Mobile USA in early 2010, we have another rumor about a revamping of their plans as well.
Supposedly there is word that T-Mobile might be releasing a $50 unlimited everything plan. That includes, voice, texting, MMS, AND DATA. Nice, especially for us “power users” that NEED data and texting 🙂
Now the only plans close to that are Sprint’s unlimited everything for $100/month (and their $80/month unlimited everything with calls to cell phones only, but that wouldn’t be comparing Apples to Apples would it?) which is TWICE the price of the rumored new plan or MetroPCS’s Unlimited Plan for $50. For those of you who don’t know what MetroPCS is, they are a phone company that gives unlimited calling to anyone in the nation, plus texting and EDGE data (no 3G yet that I am aware off) for $50ish/month. But the catch with them is that you have to be in certain areas or your phone doesn’t work, very limited coverage.
This plan would even give them a run for their money. This plan AND 21Mbps 3G without any new technology needed (unlike WiMaxx and LTE) sounds like a winner. Then there is that rumor about T-Mobile maybe buying Sprint… That new Deutsche Telekom CEO is sure getting busy with overhauling T-Mobile USA 🙂
do you know if there’s a deadline or something set for the improved 3g and the new plans cuz this just might stop me from getting the htc hero on sprint and just wait for an android fone with a full flash player, 5mp cam with flash, snapdragon, more ram, apps2sd w/o rooting and an amoled screen on tmobile with these revamped plans? do you know if they’re working on getting 4g anytime soon?
Hello PeDe,
“Early 2010” is all we have at the moment and that is just a rumor. But don’t let that stop you from doing what you want. If you want Sprint and the Hero go for it. You can always sell the Hero on eBay and get what you paid for it plus the $175 to cancel (since you are selling the phone without a contract it is worth at least that much more, just baby it and don’t scratch it too bad).
Don’t be scared of contracts…
As for all the features you just mentioned, no phone I know of has that yet (not even rumored ones). The Xperia X3 is the closest I can see with that but unless T-Mobile picks it up officially, it most likely won’t have T-Mobile’s 3G built in.
That or the N900 (no 1ghz processor but 1GB of RAM is nice.
As for 4G, keep in mind that any 4G technology will require new hardware in the phone (so that means even LESS phones to choose from). Plus WiMaxx (4G), what Sprint uses, has a theoretical speed limit of about 21MB/s and T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network (which is supposedly backwards compatible on regular 3G, have yet to test this) has a speed of about the same 21Mb/s. Only LTE has a faster speed limit right now (100Mb/s) but we are a ways off from LTE on any network as of yet.
Can I ask, is 3G a big deal or can you be happy with EDGE and Wifi where available?
hey the reason that i am figuring that google is not making A2SD not automatic is because you can get a paid app for free by using a linux os on your comp and reading the ext partition on your SDCard. i did this with pasman and it worked. i just downloaded it then pulled the app off of my sdcard and then refunded it. now the .APK is saved on my computer. I tried this with other apps so i could try them out for more than a day cuz 24 hours is not long enough for me to figure out if it is worth buying, once i figure out if it is worth having i will buy it. only reason i didnt buy pacman is because i didnt think it was fair that G1 users got it for free but not the mytouch, it went to a paid app when the mytouch came out.
I do not endorse using this method to steal apps, just stating that this is why google doesnt make it automatic
Hello ACSteffy87,
Wow, that is really interesting…
@ acsteffy, i’ve never used linux outside of android before but what you say does make sense
@ unlockr, well im iffy on converting to sprint b/c they’re notorious for being shady with their fees and my aunt is currently still being charged for something she paid for years ago and their customer service was horrible but it’s mediocre from what i’ve seen so far, plus idk how well the old cpu is gona work with the sense ui so im just waiting on reviews by actual users on the fone before i sign a contract to get it [read your article about contracts, it makes a lot of sense]
have you received any feedbacks on whether or not the htc hero 1-click rooting works on sprint’s version?
maybe apps2sd can be your next piece lol.
And in regards to the $50 plan. There is no way this will be enough to have millions flock to T-mobile. Lowering your plan enforces the stigma that the carrier doesn’t have as great of a signal or as great of a coverage. its not right but thats what people think.
Honestly i believe that it will take the iphone to propel T-mobile. In saying this im not saying that i want the iphone on tmobile, cuz i am so in love with
Android. This would be the best business move for T-mobile because so many people Recognize (are blinded) the iphone as the super phone. Or a webos device wouldnt hurt either.
I sure hope all goes through well. especially the tmobile/sprint merger or take-over whatever they are doing. WITH wimaxx hopefully! i cant wait to see what is going to happen. i love my rooted g1 and i wouldnt trade it for anything (maybe the international HERO. the one for sprint is ugly)
i’m with that on the 3g thing. most of the best phones are unlocked and overseas, so the 3g is different from there and the US, i just hope T-mobile will think about upgrading their antennas and 2100 mhz so it can work with most phones. i mean i understand they want the 3g to only work with their t-mobile branded phones but t-mobile overseas is a huge range compared to the US. maybe they should think about that. just my .2
Some one please correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve read some where in buyer’s reviews that the International Hero doesn’t work on T-Mobile’s USA 3G frequencies, it only works on Edge network and Wi-Fi does any one know, I would only trade my G1 for a Hero non other. I love HTC phones…
Hello David M.,
Read my How 3G frequencies work post…
Short answer in the meantime though, no it doesn’t work. No unlocked phone does because they don’t put T-Mobile’s 3G in the phone. Now the N900 though… look that up to on this site lol
@david m, Thats true, the hero does not get 3G speeds on T-mobile US. you cxan still use it for regular gsm and edge and wifi though. I think the big thing that is hurting tmobile is that the manufacturers are making unlocked phones that work on european 3g bands and when they make one for North America the only make them with AT&T’s and Rogers 3G bands, they leave t-Mobile out of the party. What frustrates me the most is when bloggers and manufacturers say “hey we got that same device you loved from europe now with North American 3G”. NO YOU DONT!!! if you did it would include T-mobiles 3G bands! it pisses me off for some reason, i feel like they are lying to me when they say that
Hello Acsteffy87,
Ha Ive had that same gripe for a long time… hate that North America means AT&T lol And again don’t understand why they don’t just put penta band 3G in all the phones, why make two versions and waste money and possibly have left over inventory because of certain region buying more of the phone than another. Lame to say the least my friend.
But besides not knowing why they don’t use pentaband, I can understand why they don’t use TMo if they have to choose between AT&T and TMo. TMo’s 3G is brand new and not quite national yet, (it’s spotty for me even when I’ve driving around the supposedly covered South Florida). So they figure if they have to choose, they would get more users by putting AT&T 3G in there (more coverage, covers more people, and therefore more potential buyers). But AGAIN, why not put pentaband and make everyone happy. Sigh…
Oh but Nokia and the N900 could change that really soon. Let’s see how well it sells for Nokia having TMo and NOT AT&T for a change. If enough people buy it it may show Nokia (and the other manufacturer’s) that 1700 should be in their phones 🙂 Not too mention if T-Mobile gets their HSPA+ up and running theres more reason to put 1700 in (as opposed to adding new hardware to use LTE for AT&T).
notes on the conversation so far
LTE will be widespread in 2010. VZW’s plans are to have 100million people covered with LTE before next Xmas. Its a nationwide rollout, not a city here, city there like they do most of the time. LTE phones will have new and old frequencies so they are backwards compatible.
For some reason, it was Tmo putting off the nokia smartphone relationship not nokia. I had an indepth conversation that said most of the carriers are hesitant to take the N series phones for some reason. Its not nokia, its the carriers.
the whole 1700mhz thing is annoying! just wanted to throw that out there 🙂 im sure its actually ATT doing it to make sure their phones dont get ported to Tmo with 3g. A deterrent… since otherwise you would have the handset you want, on a similar carrier (they are very similar these days coverage wise -3g) for cheaper. ATT prob pays a % to the mfctrs to do this. just a theory though, but one that makes sence.
TMo will NOT buy sprint, who keeps putting up that rumor? that doesnt make sence to do on any level. of course that $50 plan rumor while prob off, would be sweet. I dont see it going that low, as they are a national carrier and not METROPCS, and the massive expansion they are doing is costing $$ and they need to pay those bills. of course, i could be wrong.
I still don’t know why they can’t make the units without a frequency… But with a “slot” for a “frequency chip” to be added by the carrier of choice? Would that just not be possible? I don’t know enough about how the phone is made, so it is just a comment.
Hello EarWax,
Not sure if you could put a frequency chip in a phone like that, but still dont understand why they just dont put the frequencies in the phone in the first place. Couldnt be that expensive…
TMOBILE IS FULL OF SHIT I CALLED IN TO ASK ABOUT THE 50 DOLLAR PLAN AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PLAN IS ONLY FOR LOYAL CUSTOMER ONLY IM SAYING THAT THERE FULL OF SHIT BCUSE A HAVE BEEN WITH TMOBILE MORE THEN A 3YEAR I HAD A FAMILY PLAN AND I DESEEDED TO CHANGE MY PLAN TO A SINGLE PLAN AND THE LADY A TMOBILE TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD BE EASIER TO GET A NEW PLAN BY ME GETTING A NEW PLAN NOW MAKES ME NOT A LOYAL CUSTOMER THIS PLAN IS REAL MY FATHER HAVE IT FROM PUERTO RICO AREA CODE.
Macuncity,
You are right about the 50 dollars unlimited plan, but that is for minutes only and for customers that have been with the company for 2 years plus.
That is not part of the rumored plan, the rumored plan is the 50/month plan for unlimited EVERYTHING and that will be available to all customers.
The loyalty plan applies to the billing account number that has been with tmobile for 2 years, thats why u didnt get it
This web site is the best thank you 4 making it easier 4 us to hack r phones
Hello Macunity,
You are very welcome! Happy to help!
hey unlockr the new Unlimited plan from T-Mobile is out, but it is not $50.00. There are two current plans… there is a Even More Plus Plan which u will have to lose your ability to upgrade every 22 months but you will save a few extra dollars… the other plan is the Even More Plan which you will still have the ability to upgrade every 22 months… I’m not quite sure on the price on the even more plan but the even more plus plan is $79.00 unlimited everything…
Hello Nv5killz,
I just did a full breakdown post on the new plans. About to put it up. I even explain the price differences that seem to be confusing people.
Should be up in a couple of hours.
