Nexus One Update Announced, OTA Begins Today (Updated 02.03.10)

Earlier HTC Tweeted:

“Here is a rundown on the coming software update for the Nexus One. It’s rolling out OTA starting today.”

Apparently this update will include the following features:

Google Goggles Integration
New version of Google Maps
Pinch to Zoom functionality in maps, gallery, and browser! (This is a biggy 🙂
And better 3G connectivity (thank goodness)

Head over to the report site for more information:

PS: FOR THOSE WITH A ROOTED NEXUS, you might want to not get the OTA and just wait for the OTA to be incorporated into a custom ROM (in all likelihood it will be incorporated into a custom ROM BEFORE you get the OTA anyway, so no waiting).

UPDATE 02.10.10 –

For those wanting to update here you go!

If you are rooted (doesn’t matter what ROM you are using or if you are not using a custom ROM), go here, then download the download “With Modaco Additions” and put in on your SD Card, boot into recovery, Wipe, and Apply the update.

If you are NOT rooted and have a stock Nexus One, then go here and download the very first download under “ERD79 to ERE27 – official update patch zip”, place it on your SD card, rename it to update, and boot into recovery then select Apply Update.

Enjoy!
Thanks Modaco!

  1. Unlockr,
To clarify, I have rooted my Nexus One and I loaded the MoDaCo Enhanced Rom on my phone. Will there be a way to find out when this Rom will have the update integrated into it?

    Thanks, Dennis

    1. Dennis,

Just so you know, I tried Modaco’s ROM and then used Cyanogens and I prefer Cyanogens, much faster when playing a video game on the phone.
But either way, their is an update you can flash over whatever ROM you have to get the new update, I’ll post it here shortly.

  2. Unlockr,
Thanks for the response. To replace my ROM with the Cyanogens ROM, do I follow the same procedure that you posted on Jan 8(updated on 1/11)? Do I need to wipe the Modaco ROM first? New at this and I don’t want to screw up my phone.
    Thanks, Dennis
PS. the post was: How to: Load a custom ROM on the Nexus One

    1. Dennis,

Yup, just goto our download section and find Cyanogen’s ROM.
      1. Download it and the Google Addon Pack he has there as well (he has instructions in the first post).
      2. Save them both to your SD (not in any folders)
      3. Boot into recovery mode
      4. Wipe data
      5. Apply the Cyanogen ROM Update
      6. Then apply the Google Add on Update

All done, you’re on Cyanogen’s ROM.
Then if you want to get the new update (but lose root access for now, don’t worry you can flash a new ROM and get it back once Cyanogen incorporates the update into one of his ROMs):

      1. Download the Full Update from the link in this post
      2. Save it to your SD card (not in any folders)
      3. Boot into recovery
      4. NO NEED TO WIPE
      5. Apply the Update

      Enjoy!

  3. Unlockr,
I have a rooted N1. I installed cyanogen update to apply the multitouch function. When I did it, I remember I lost everything (APN specifications, contacts, apps, feeds, etc). Will this update change again my phone (such as a brand new configuration) or it will just apply some changes and everything will be okay after the update.
    Thanx for your comments.

  4. Unlockr –
Will I harm my rooted N1 if I apply OTA update? And is there a link to maualy updated my rooted N1 without a custom rom?

  5. So even with the unlocked bootloader your still getting the ota update? you said itll unroot the phone does that mean the bootloader will relock?

  6. ok so i have a nexus one that is not rooted,if i flash the update to my phone will lose my OTA on the future and is there a unroot method yet.

  7. If i flash my not rooted N1 with the update,will i lose any updates over the air in the future and does this part:{
Just so you are aware, flashing this update will cause you to lose root access for your applications (but you can still use root access to flash ROMs etc in recovery mode). So after flashing this, you will have to reroot the phone or wait for your favorite developer to incorporate this update into their ROM. Once they do, you can just download their new ROM, place it on the SD card, boot into recovery and flash it over this update without issue.} apply to people who did not root they’re phone

    1. Brandon and Bryant,

The update that Im telling you to download (the one at the top of the dowload page) literally is the OTA in an update.zip form. It will do exactly what the OTA would do, nothing else.

  8. Unlockr,

Thanks for the info. Just acouple of questions:1.If I already flashed a custom Recovery Image when flashed a custom ROM,do I need to do that again when I replace the custom ROM with a different custom ROM?
2.How can one find out when Modaco or Cyanogens has updated their custom ROMs with the update?
    Thanks, Dennis

    1. Dennis,

      1. No, your recovery image will remain.
      2. You can check back at our Downloads section and click on the link to Cyanogen or Modaco’s ROMs and you’ll see a changelog listing the ERE27 update being added.

  9. I am using the right update.zip i download the main update itself. then i rename it update, and put it on my sd card. but when i go into recovery and i try to apply the update it says E:signature verification failed installation aborted.

    1. Luis,

Oh sorry, got you confused with another guy that was asking about the same thing but he never rooted.
Yea that update should be fine.
You have a custom recovery image right? If not, you need to flash that first (it’s in the how to load a custom ROM procedure) then flash that update.

  10. I’ve tried updating since the update to the article and now its telling me that the signature verification failed. Any ideas?

  11. Thank you that made it work 🙂

one more question. now that i lost the root privileges, can i still get them back and have the update?

  12. Hi everyone,
    Unlockr,
I wrote a question a couple of days ago. But now I have received the notification to update my N1. It was a system notification and I decided to update (I was happy because I did it “in the proper way”) and it restarted trying to apply the update. Then, an exclamation mark appeared. Nothing happened and I had to turn it off. Nothing happened again, I haven’t received that notification again (about the update), and I’m worried about that exclamation. Can I know someway if it has been updated or if I couldn’t do it?
    I’ll appreciate your help.
    Thanx!

    1. Edward,

That exclamation is the recovery screen (not anything to be scared of, although that exclamation point is scary looking lol).
It just means it boot into recovery in order to load the Update, that is normal. What is not normal is that it stopped and didn’t finish. I would call HTC or T-Mobile and let them know what happened and they can resend it.

  13. To all,

Flashed the update for the rooted nexus provided by Modaco. Everything seems to be working(multi-touch in maps, browser, and photos).I ran a speedtest and my T-Mobile 3g went from 500kbits/s to 800kbits/s.
Hopefully this continues. Looking foward to rerooting the phone and installing a different ROM when they are compatable with the update.

    Take care, Dennis

  14. Wifi not working, I did update steps 1 and 2 for rooted device and everything works but wifi
    1-Main update
    2-Radio update

    1. Gotti,

Noone said to load the Radio… You were just supposed to load the Main Update (it has the Radio built in).
Try to just load the Main Update again (not the radio this time). Should fix it.
Otherwise, do a Wipe and then load the Main Update again.

  15. Just downloaded the update you guys put up. Works fine on my rooted Nexus, but I’m missing using my root apps so come on guys lets get new Rom cracking! lol

  16. The update is with MT in the browser
But one thing I did notice was the pulled doesn’t notification
Is not clear it looks t like the one from a g1 it sucks. !!!!
How can i get rid of the update or can I just change the way it looks

  17. hey i got the new update but when i try to download some apps from the apps store it doesn’t download it just stay’s there and say’s downloading.. can u help??

  18. Okay unlockr sorry to bug ya again, so when I did the main update wifi was up and running, but I lost root, so I rooted again and I lost wifi again, any suggestions?

  19. Update again TheUnlockr Says: February 5th, 2010 at 12:37 pm Jae No clue what you mean? lo

@the unlockr, yeah is tricky to type with my nexus
I’m getting used to it though, anyway what I want to say was
Mt (multi touch)on browser is koo,but the notification pulled down is no longer clear it looks like my g1 it sucks.can I get back to the og (original )rom. ?

  20. i just have root and whatever i do doesnt work,
firstly i want to mention that the google own update was firstly done through the phone. when trying to flash recovery image the device isnt being detected (no serial is coming up) but it worked when i rooted it.

  21. My pc is not detecting phone in fastboot, just so you know i applied googles own update from the phone without knowing i couldnt if it was rooted. i rooted the phone no problems but im stuck now.

  22. Ok guys! great news! My rooted Nexus One is back to normal with the update! Here’s what you do! Just simply do the update above Update 02.03.10 Now after that the phone want be able to use rooted programs, so all you do is follow the same steps you did when you first rooted the Nexus One, it’s gonna say your phone is already unlocked. When it says that then you’ve rerooted the phone and all the root programs are now usable again! Peace!

  23. @Gotti If it the wifi doesn’t work then reboot the phone go bak into recovery and load up your rom again and it should work!

  24. To Unlockr and/or Tromain:

I rooted my Nexus and put a custom ROM(Modaco)on. I updated my phone using the above procedure. From the replies above, I think I can reroot my phone but can I put a custom ROM back on without ruining the update? Or do I need to wait for a custom ROM that is update capatable? Also, if I get notified that I the OTA Update is available,do I ignore it or can I download it?

    Thanks, Dennis

  25. WOW Multi touch Now I will buy the nexus its like google just like punched apple in the face and told him to stop pushing him around.

    1. Breck,

Ha, I plan to do a review on the Nexus this week now that Google sent out an update, have yet to see a review that actually explains the benefits (like instant updates).

  26. hi unlockr.

i have a rooted phone and i have no idea how to update my nexus.

i rooted the phone so i can use a few apps that required a root.

when i click to download your update file it says “FORBIDDEN” You don’t have permission to access /content//// on this server.

also, what does it mean to flash the memory? i dont understand these terms. is there a step by step guide to update a rooted nexus? i saw a few step by step guides but they use language that i dont understand.

    please help me out.

    thanks
