No Factory Images, Proprietary Binary Hosting for HTC One and Galaxy S4 Google Edition Phones

The highly anticipated release of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Edition devices have caused quite the buzz. Shortly after their public release we learned that the source code would not be made available and now it has been confirmed that the factory images and proprietary binaries will not be made public either. Essentially, that leaves users with a CDMA Nexus device.

Apparently Google will not directly handle software updates for the Google Play Edition devices. Google supplies the builds to OEMs when new versions of Android are released and what the OEMs want to do from there is up to them. Here’s what Google had to say regarding updates for the HTC One and Galaxy S4:

On background, we will be working very closely with Samsung and HTC on future software updates for these devices and they will receive software updates shortly after a new version is released.

What this means is that even though you bought a stock Android device your updates are still in the manufacturer’s hands. That’s why the Nexus lineup has the leg up since it gets updates straight from Google, not the OEM.

The next piece of news is that Google will not be hosting factory images and binaries like they do for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. This means it might as well be like a CDMA device. So, now that this has been confirmed tell us what you think. Was this what you wanted, or are you left feeling disappointed.
