Sony Ericssion Xperia Ray up for preorder, to ship by August 15th

One among the three phones that Sony Ericsson announced recently, the Xperia Ray Gingerbread phone is definitely the best of the lot with its BRAVIA Mobile-based 3.3-inch display and its 8MP camera.  The device, along with the others, were announced to be released in the third quarter of 2011 and we even heard that Three UK has already picked up the Xperia Ray to make it available on its network.

The device is now up for preorder on Play.com, an online UK retailer who promises to the ship the handset by August 15th, which lands bang in the middle of Q3, as Sony Ericsson promised.  The device will also be available unlocked and not tethered to any service provider, which of course means a higher price, and sure enough, the current tag reads £350, which translates to around $560 odd greens this side of the Atlantic.

If the retailer does manage to ship the device by August 15th, it would be prudent to assume that the device will become available more widely across the Europe and may be even the Asian continent. The same could hold true for a North American release, but with a slowish (by current standards) 1GHz processor and average specs, will the Xperia Ray win over enough customers with its style factor alone? We’ll be here to see.
