Sony Ericsson Promises All 2011 Xperia Handsets to Receive Android 4.0, Timeline Unknown

Sony Ericsson has promised today to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to its entire lineup of  2011 Xperia handsets. As part of their new Ice Cream Sandwich mission, the company plans to modify their custom interface to the new OS regardless of the device’s size. Handsets will range from the Xperia mini all the way to the Xperia arc S. The only thing missing from the ambitious plan was an expected timeline.

Sony Ericsson is not the first smartphone manufacturer to make a commitment to upgrading to the Android 4.0 platform. Other already committed manufacturers include Samsung, ASUS, Motorola, and LG. However, HTC seems to be the most committed, as the company took steps to create and provide an early road-map in its plan to upgrade to Android 4.0.

We’re not expecting most devices pre-Galaxy Nexus to receive the full Android 4.0 treatment. Some features may be left out like context-sensitive touchscreen navigation buttons, NFC-based Android Beam sharing, or the fully HD-optimized interface. The devices should however, receive most of the tablet inspired features.
