Tegra2-powered LG G2x coming to T-Mobile this spring
T-Mobile USA may be history in a year or two (if the AT&T acquisition goes through as planned), but that hasn’t stopped the carrier from announcing some supercool smartphones/tablets. Alongside the 3D-enabled tablet from LG, the G-Slate, the carrier is also planning to release a smartphone that has enough power to equal some current-standard desktops – the LG G2x.
If you have been keeping up with mobile tech recently, you should already know that the G2x is just a rebranded Optimus 2X that has made its debut in Europe and Korea already. For the most part, the specs remain the same as the original device with a dual-core 1GHz Tegra2 processor, mini-HDMI out, 4-inch WVGA multitouch display, 8GB of onboard memory with 32GB microSD expansion, and an 8-megapixel shooter capable of 1080p video recording (with 1.3mpx front-facing camera for video chat). The only change is support for T-Mobile’s flavor of 4G that brings download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps theoretically. The device still runs on Android 2.2 Froyo, but this should be upgradeable to Gingerbread in the future, according to LG. The device will also come preloaded with Need for Speed Shift HD, T-Mobile TV, T-Mobile Qik Video Chat and various other apps.
The release date is set vaguely for this spring, but word around the blogosphere points to a release as early as April 20; as for its price, we could safely look at a $199 tag with a two-year T-Mobile agreement.
