Video: How to Jailbreak iOS 8.1.3 (Using iOS 8.2 Beta 2)

UPDATE: It seems Apple has stopped signing the iOS 8.2 Beta 2 file which means that this tutorial will no longer work. Hope some of you got the jailbreak in before that happened! As soon as a new jailbreak happens, I’ll be doing a video on it ASAP. In the meantime, subscribe to my YouTube channel, Twitter, Facebook, and/or Google+ for updates on when it’ll happen. Thanks!

I know what you’re thinking –there’s no jailbreak for iOS 8.1.3. And, of course, you are absolutely correct. But there’s more than one way to gain jailbreak an iPhone (think that’s a saying, no?). Thanks to a reddit user, it turns out that the PPJailbreak (they’re foreign –clearly didn’t know what a PP could be in the States) and the latest Taig jailbreak work to jailbreak iOS 8.2 Beta 2 (it doesn’t work on Beta 3 or higher, however).

The beauty of this is that even though you’re on iOS 8.1.3 and are not able to downgrade to iOS 8.1.2 to jailbreak that, you can update from iOS 8.1.3 to iOS 8.2 Beta 2 and then jailbreak from there.

Now, iOS 8.2 Beta 5 was just launched so it’s hard to find the Beta 2 that we need to jailbreak but I managed to find most of them and put them in my own Google Drive for you guys to download them from. Without further ado, here’s how to update to the iOS 8.2 Beta 2 firmware and then jailbreak it and install Cydia.

I. Before You Begin

  1. Do a backup in iTunes just to make sure you don’t lose anything before you start.
  2. If using Windows, you’ll be using the Taig jailbreak and if using Mac, you’ll be using the PPJailbreak tool. Both procedures are essentially identical so you can follow this regardless of your OS with the only difference being which tool you download and click jailbreak in at the end.

II. Update to iOS 8.2 Beta 2

UPDATE: If the first link doesn’t work to download the beta, try the alternative link (same thing goes for if you get an error when trying to install the beta on your phone, try the second link). Will try and get iPad/iPod Touch links up soon!

  1. Download the iOS 8.2 Beta 2 IPSW file using the direct downloads below for your specific device and save it to your desktop (if you need help figuring out which one is yours, this site has a search field to help you figure it out):
    iPhone 4S | Alternative Link
iPhone 5 (GSM) | Alternative Link
    iPhone 5 (CDMA/Global) | Alternative Link
iPhone 5C (GSM) | Alternative Link
    iPhone 5C (CDMA/Global) | Alternative Link
iPhone 5S (GSM) | Alternative Link
    iPhone 5S (CDMA/Global) | Alternative Link
iPhone 6 Plus | Alternative Link
    iPhone 6 Alternative Link
  2. Download the latest version of iTunes and install it (if you don’t already have it).
  3. Plug the iPhone in via USB cable.

II. Unjailbreak the iPhone (If Necessary)

If you are already jailbroken, there is a good chance you’ll need to unjailbreak first, update to iOS 8.2 Beta 2, then rejailbreak from there. If you are not jailbroken already, just skip this section.

  1. Download your current iOS firmware from this site here (make sure it’s the one that matches your device, use this chart for help).
  2. Turn off the iPhone.
  3. Hold down Power and the Home button at the same time until you see the screen go from the Apple logo to black (approx. 10 seconds) then let go of the Power button but continue to hold the Home button until iTunes pops up a dialog box saying it has discovered an iPhone in recovery mode.
  4. Click Restore in iTunes and let it restore your phone (this will also update you to iOS 8.1.3). (If you are reading this after iOS 8.2 comes up, then do not, do this part as it will update you to 8.2 and you could potentially lost the ability to jailbreak again –just confirm when restoring that it’s install 8.1.3 and nothing else).

III. Install iOS 8.2 Beta 2

  1. Hold down Shift if using Windows and Option if using Mac and click on Update in iTunes.
  2. Select the iOS 8.2 Beta 2 firmware and click OK for it to update.

IV. Jailbreak iOS 8.2 Beta 2

Download the Jailbreak Tools

  1. Download the jailbreak tool for your OS and save it to your desktop:
    Taig (for Windows) Alternative Download
    PPJailbreak (for Mac) Alternative Download

Prepare Your Device for Jailbreaking

  1. On the device, go to Settings > iCloud and turn Off Find My Phone.
  2. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and turn off your passcode entirely.
  3. Pull up the Control Center from the bottom of the device screen and tap the Airplane icon to enable Airplane mode.
  4. Plug the phone in via USB cable to the computer. If iTunes opens, close it.

Jailbreak the iPhone

  1. Open the jailbreak tool (if using Windows, right-click it and click Run As Administrator) and wait for it to recognize your device.
  2. Uncheck any boxes in the app (these generally install other stores besides Cydia that we just don’t want –they’re in Chinese).
  3. Click the big button to jailbreak the device.

Done. You can now check out my jailbreak tweak section for cool jailbreak tweaks I’ve found and start installing ones you like. If you ever want to unjailbreak the iPhone, just head here for a video on that.

Let me know if it worked for you!

What do I do if taig says I need to download and install the newest version of itunes and I have? And I cannot find help on the taig website. 🙁

        1. Betas dont get signed. So no thats not it. You might be flashing the wrong file. Use the link in my previous comment above to make sure the file you are downloading matches your phone. Otherwise try a different computer.

  2. I’ve tried every method in the book, latest version and downgraded versions of iTunes, multiple IPSW firmware files including yours and many others, and I always end up with some problem. When I got 3194, I reset my hosts file and then the software wasn’t compatible. Then when I instead tried using the “iphone 7 restore file” I got error 1667.

Any solutions here? Running stock 8.1.3.

    1. That error means iTunes can’t communicate with Apple’s servers. Most people suggest trying a different computer as its the easiest solution. Otherwise Google Error 3194 and there are some solutions around (again swapping computers being the easiest by far). I’ve never had the error so dont have a solution myself for you.

    1. Yes, but you’ll need to find the iOS 8.2 Beta 2 ipsw file specific for that model. You can either Google around for it, or wait till I find it and upload it (hopefully this weekend).

  3. Nice video, thank you–very easy to follow and understand (which is most welcome for a newb). Will definitely report on results with iPhone 5S A1533 running 8.1.3 (via upgrade to 8.2 beta 2 + TaiG J.B.)
Just one (minor) point : As most Windows users will be downloading the TaiG file in .zip format (version 1300) they will have to unzip the compressed file prior to running the actual J.B. (obvious, but still worth mentioning?) Appreciate your effort and explanations!

  4. I have stayed up all night trying to get beta 8.2 into my new iphone 6 plus which has 8.1.3. I keep getting the can’t communicate error and having to restore my phone after the update option fails. Please help. packagepagan@aim.com

      1. Thank you David. Please let me know if you get a fix or update so I can downgrade my iPhone 6 plus. By the way your the man.

      1. I tried downloading that one but it still says it isnt the compatible one, and yes i have chose the right download for my phone

          1. well right now im out of the states in a different country but the carrier is called SMART

          2. I’m not familiar with the carrier but check if its CDMA or GSM by googling it. And then try the other iPhone 5S file and let me know the error or if it worked (one is for GSM and one is for CDMA and they won’t work for each other so my guess is you just have the wrong one).

And then double check the file name with the model number here on this site to make sure its for CDMA or GSM – http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/

          3. the carrier is a GSM type and i’ve downloaded both types to try them out CDMA just goes to the error of not being compatible but the GSM file shows that its extracting but at the end it says “The Phone could not be updated. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”

          4. Got it. Well, I was fearing this would happen. Apple seems to be not signing the file anymore (which means iTunes won’t let you flash it). We might be stuck.

If anyone can confirm that it’s still working for them please let us know!

ok David. read all this comments…seems i can not downgrade from 8.1.3 to 8.2 beta. ist right? so we stuck in this 8.1.3 ? 🙁

  5. Hi David i get ”firmware isn’t compatible” i have iPhone 5 (GSM) model i downloaded the right file im sure of it. Model of my phone is A1228 but when i put Serial Number it shows its A1229.Does this has something to do with it?
    Thanks in advice

      1. I just downloaded the CDMA file and it works! Sorry for the false alarm :/ I made mistake sorry once again…

    1. We’re waiting for other users to confirm or deny if it works for them. Give it a try and let us know. Worst case you restore to 8.1.3 and restore you backup as if nothing happened.

  6. I tried but I keep getting the error “This device is not eligible…” something about the servers not supporting this download software version. Any help to fix this?

  7. Hello David,
I am trying to update my iphone 5s from 8.1.3 to 8.2 beta.
I did download from your link but when I try to update on itunes I am getting a message saying that the version of my device is not valid for what I am trying to do.
do you know if is still possible to update from 8.1.3 to 8.2 beta like on your video?
    Tks

    1. Realist Vision

Thanks bro. I’ve tried to downgrade iTunes to 12.0.1 and tried to update v2 beta on 8.1.3 and kept getting error messages when it was done extracting! Oh well, I will have to wait till next time then. Thanks again.

      1. Yeah, was a bit of a short window for this jailbreak (soon as Apple realized what was happening they shut it down). If people managed to do it quickly they got it otherwise we’ll just have till 8.2 comes out fully (supposedly Taig claims to have it jailbroken already). Soon as it’s out I’ll do a video.

    1. Never most likely. But iOS 8.2 is rumored to already be jail broken. When it comes out (the full version not betas) we’ll see and if so I’ll be sure to do a video as normal.

    1. Hello Julio,

      Thanks!
Unfortunately, though, as I mentioned at the top of the article recently, this no longer works. There was a very small window that it worked before Apple stopped signing the Beta 2 file which stopped us from being able to flash it. Soon as a new jailbreak comes out, I’ll do a video on it. Subscribe if you want to be notified when it is up.

  9. Hello,i do backup on my iphone 4s, then i restore it and when restore was finish i restore my old backup and then i update my phone with your file 8.2 restore but itunes say an error and i cant update it how to do???? Where i was failed? Sorry for my bad english…

Hello, I’m from Mozambique. Can you please notifies me in my email when the jailbreak of 8.2 or 8.1.3 cames? I have try do downgrade from 8.1.3 to 8.2 beta 2 but I get error 3914 be cause Apple stopped sign 8.2 beta 2. Sorry for my English, lol

  10. Hi David. I woke up this morning and received a message on my iPhone 6 Plus that iOS 8.2 was now available for my phone to update. I currently am on the dreaded 8.1.3 obviously and want to jailbreak my device. Should I update it to the new software and try to jailbreak or should I just wait for a solution so that I am not stuck on the new software?

    1. I would wait until there is a jailbreak before updating personally. Supposedly there is one coming soon for 8.2. I’ll do a video the minute it comes out and post it here.

    1. Please read the update at the top of the articles and the comments. Apple speed this from working. Soon as there is a newer jailbreak I’ll add it to the site asap.

  11. hey david i am facing problem in jailbreak my phone running with ios8.2 as pp jailbreak file after decent my phone when i uncheck the chines app and click on start after that it dose not process further some error appere in chines so please help me….

    1. This only worked on iOS 8.2 BETA 2. It doesn’t work on iOS 8.2 (and it even stopped working for iOS 8.2 Beta 2 since Apple killed it).
You’ll have to wait for a new jailbreak, I’ll do one as soon as it comes out. Follow me or theunlockr on social networks for an update when its live.

  12. Hi David,
do you think Taig or Pangu are going to release a jailbreak for 8.2 soon?
I thought it wouldn’t take this long looking at the previous jailbreaks.

    1. Unfortunately no. Soon as a reliable jailbreak is ready though I’ll post it here on the site. Follow TheUnlockr on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Google+ for updates as they happen.

    1. Read the instructions or watch the video 🙂 I’ve uploaded them to my own mediafire account and put the links in here. Not that any of that is relevant as this tutorial no longer works as I mentioned at the top of the article lol
Soon as a new jailbreaking tutorial is available I’ll add it to the site.

  13. Please help me i want to get a cydia and i work for it but i lose please tell me step by step please i have ipad 4 and my ios is 8.1.3

    1. Generally its out of nowhere but will coincide with a new iOS release (so the jailbreak lasts longer before the next iOS release and it’s patched). So the next chance is when iOS 8.3 comes out.

  14. hats off to u david………you have replied to each and every question even though the question was repeated many times……
