How to Root and Flash the ClockworkMod Recovery on the Galaxy Tab P1000 (running Gingerbread)

The original Galaxy Tab has been around for almost two years now, but the device, with its 1GHz Cortex-A8 CPU, might take a while to fade away in the background.  There is a robust development community that has built up around this device and it is still getting custom ROMs, some even based on ICS.  This post will show you to root this device and flash the ClockworkMod Recovery at the same time and by the end of the procedure, you should be able to choose a custom ROM of your liking and flash away!!

I.  Before You Begin

1.  As always, back up your data before you begin with the procedure.

2.  Make sure that you have all the proper drivers installed on your Windows PC before you proceed; if in doubt about this, download and install Samsung Kies and this should take care of the drivers needed for the procedure to work.

3.  This method is only for the GSM version of the Galaxy Tab P1000 running Gingerbread 2.3.3, so make sure that this is the device you have.

II.  Necessary Downloads

1.  Odin3 version 1.7.

2.  Root and ClockworkMod Recovery tar File.

III.  Rooting the Galaxy Tab and Flashing ClockworkMod Recovery

1.  Download and extract Odin3 v1.7.rar to a folder on your desktop.

2.  From the extracted folder, double-click on Odin3 v1.7.exe to open the Odin application.

3.  On Odin, click on PDA.  Navigate to the location where you have downloaded CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar to from above and select it.

4.  This is the most important instruction ever and we really can’t stress how important this is.  Make sure that the Re-Partition tickbox is unchecked!!  Ticking this is a surefire way to brick your device.

5.  Power down your P1000.

6.  With the device powered down, press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons until the device boots into Download Mode.

7.  Connect the device to your Windows PC using a microUSB cable.  Odin should now recognize your device and the ID:COM should light up yellow.

8.  Make sure that your Odin screen looks like this before you proceed:

9.  Click on Start.  Again, make sure that Re-Partition is unchecked!!

You have now rooted and installed ClockworkMod Recovery on your Galaxy Tab P1000!!

IV.  Installing Custom ROMs

1.  Download your favorite ROM from our ROM Section.

2.  Copy the downloaded ROM zip file to the SD card on your device and disconnect the device from your PC.

3.  Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery.  To do this, with the device powered down, press and hold Volume Up + Power until it boots into Recovery.

4.  Make a Nandroid backup before you install the new ROM.

5.  After backup, select ‘Install zip from SD card‘.  Navigate to the location where you downloaded the ROM zip, select it and then select ‘Install‘.

  1. when i download CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar all i download is a zimage file, i think the link is broken or sumthing

    1. It should take a little while to flash the file using Odin. You should be able to see the current process on your PC’s screen and when it’s done, you’ll have a confirmation message on your screen.

      Thanks GELIMA!

  2. I want to unroot my tab … i rooted it using odin, but now i m feeling it become slow so i want to back it in my original stage is there any way for it

    Thanks

    1. Joginder, as far as we know, rooting does not slow down your device! This could most probably be due to something else, like a background app that’s eating up your RAM!

  3. Hi, i followed the above steps for froyo not noticing that it won’t work for froyo. Now my phone just won’t boot up, it tries and then again it restarts..what can i do?

          2. It seems something’s there on your phone that’s causing this issue. Look for any suspicious app on your phone and remove (uninstall) it and then try again.

  5. when i connect the tablet to the pc no message is shown in the odin in as it is to be yellow (no sign) while it is in the download mode. please suggest.

  6. I have the clockworkmod installed now, but I can’t get to copy a ROM to install into the phone, can someone help ?

    1. Mahesh Makvana

If it’s not turning yellow, that means you don’t have the required drivers installed on your PC. To solve this, just head to your manufacturer’s website and download the drivers for your device, then install them on your PC.

      It should solve the issue.

  7. EducatedChicken

my tab doesn’t boot and it gets stuck on the samsung logo and restarts again and again forever and ever.. any help would be appreciated.. thanks in advance

    1. Mahesh Makvana

Did it start behaving like this after you flashed a custom ROM?

If so, then just flash the stock ROM and everything should be as good as it was.

        1. you must have had froyo. had the same problem here.

          download the appropriate stock rom-http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-P1000

launch odin, put the device in download mode.and start the process by selecting the req. file in pda.make sure repartition isnt checked. now it should boot and start with gingrbread.

if it then falls into a bootloop, then do this

n my case this update completed but it went into a “Boot Loop”. Pretty
much it stayed on the orbing SAMSUNG screen and never got past there.

To fix this you need to also update the DBDATA.RFS.TAR file.

          Launch Odin3

Put the device in download mode

          Connect to the PC

Should now see a active connection being indicated in the ID:COM box – (In yellow)

Click the reset button to clear all the fields

Only check the Auto Reboot option

Click the PDA button and specify the
          DBDATA.RFS.TAR file

Click start and wait for the PASS

You should now be able to reboot.
          now,happily run gingerbread on it.

  18. – Thks a lot, Ryan I. & Dax K. ! The Update does r-e-a-ll-y function & is worth a while, all that gamble risk, though.
**/ The guys who got stuck with their Tab_P1000 with 2.2_Froyo, while rooting it, should try to retrieve it through Odin307.zip [=Odin3 v3.07.exe], 454KB, reapplying the same .tar archive for PDA software (ClockWorkMode). Somehow it’s resolved my deadlock with the CWM.

  22. Thank you so much for an excellently documented process! I originally tried following Chainfire’s steps but there were dead links and other show-stoppers in the procedure which I couldn’t get past but your steps were all perfect and explained thoroughly. Much appreciated!

  23. This is by far the best article – written-well for anyone who has no idea of what the heck rooting is. Thanks a lot for this post.
