How To Type with One Hand on Larger Samsung Devices

Some of Samsung’s larger screened devices are fantastic for watching videos and multitasking (and the multi-window and pen window features sure don’t hurt either). However, a large screen means a large keyboard, which makes it much harder to type with one hand. Samsung has cleverly added an option to its larger phones that shrinks the keyboard to a more manageable size for one-handed typing. Here’s how to set it up and use the one handed keyboard on the larger Samsung devices that support it.

I. Turn on One-Handed Keyboard on the Fly

1. Open an app that utilizes the keyboard, such as Messages.

2. Tap the area where it says Enter Message if the keyboard does not automatically appear (it should).

3. Tap and hold the button with the microphone and gear at the bottom left of the keyboard until a menu appears.

4. Tap the keyboard icon on the very right.

5. Tap One-handed operation on the right.

6. The keyboard will become smaller, making it much easier to type with one hand.

II. Switch the One-Handed Keyboard from Right to Left (Optional)

1. Tap the arrow on the bottom left.

III. Turn Off One-Handed Keyboard On The Fly

1. Do steps 1-4 in Section I above but instead of tapping One-handed keyboard shown in #5, tap Normal.

This procedure also makes it easier for swipe typing, which is one of my favorite Android features.
