RIM Will Stay Loyal to Flash for BlackBerry PlayBook, Despite Flash Receiving the Kiss of Death
Despite Adobe giving Flash the kiss of death for TVs and all mobile devices, that doesn’t seem to worry Research In Motion (RIM). In a clear cut statement issued to All Things D, the BlackBerry maker just isn’t ready to throw in the towel due to their commitment as an Adobe source code licensee. Here’s what RIM had to say,
“As an Adobe source code licensee, we will continue to work on and release our own implementations. RIM remains committed to delivering an uncompromised Web browsing experience to our customers, including native support for Adobe Flash Player on our BlackBerry PlayBook tablet (similar to a desktop PC browser), as well as HTML5 support on both our BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook browsers. In fact, we are pleased that Adobe will focus more efforts on the opportunities that HTML5 presents for our developers, and shares our commitment to HTML5 as we discussed together at DevCon Americas.”
We can’t say we’re entirely surprised to hear this considering Flash is a major component of BlackBerry’s QNX platform. We’re just not sure how far RIM plans to take this, when everyone else has already jumped aboard the HTML 5 train and moving on.
