How to Root and install TWRP Recovery on the HTC Amaze 4G running Ice-Cream Sandwich
The Amaze 4G recently got updated to Ice-Cream Sandwich, breaking root for devices that were previously running Gingerbread. This post will show you how to root the ICS-running Amaze 4G and install a custom recovery if you plan to flash a custom ROM.
I. Before You Begin
1. Make sure that you have an unlocked bootloader before you proceed.
2. This solution works for both the Gingerbread and Ice-cream Sandwich versions of the Amaze 4G.
II. Necessary Downloads
Hasoon2000 Amaze 4G AIO Kit v3.2 (latest version as of writing this post) from this XDA thread [Link on second post].
III. Rooting the Amaze 4G
1. Extract Amaze_All-In-One_Kit_V3.2.rar that you downloaded above to a folder on your desktop.
2. From the extracted folder, run Amaze 3.2.exe.
3. If you haven’t installed the necessary HTC drivers already, select Install HTC Drivers and click on Go. Wait for the drivers to install.
4. Connect your device to your PC with USB Debugging enabled. To enable USB Debugging, go to Settings > Developer Options and tick the USB Debugging checkbox.
5. If you haven’t unlocked your bootloader already, follow the instructions in the first section of Hasoon2000 AIO Kit.
6. Select Perm Root (GB/ICS) under the Extras section and click on Run. This will push the SuperSU.zip file to your device’s SD card and reboot it to recovery.
7. Once in recovery, choose Install zip from SD Card.
8. Locate SuperSU.zip on your SD card and flash it.
9. Select Back and then Reboot the phone.
After reboot, you should be holding an Amaze 4G that is rooted and ready for all those root-only apps available on Google Play!
IV. Flashing Custom Recovery
1. Connect your device with USB Debugging enabled.
2. Select TWRP 2.1.0 under the Recovery section and click on Flash Recovery.
3. Follow on-screen instructions and wait for reboot.
All credit goes to hasoon2000 for creating this wonderful tool that offers much more than just plain rooting your device! If you like his work, be sure to thank him or even donate to him on his XDA thread!!
After downloaded the Unlock_code.bin file, I couldn’t copy it to the “data” folder in the tool kit. Please help.
What error did you get while copying the file?
once downloaded the Unlock_code.bin, as instructed I go to explorer – download folder and right click on Unlock_code.bin file to select copy, then open “data folder” from the tool kit, with cursor in the “data folder” I right click to select paste, but there’s no paste option. I tried to drag and drop, that doesn’t work either. thank you for your reply.
you are talking about the bootloader unlock before you actually install TWRP on your Amaze 4G, right Quang? What OS are you running on your PC?
that’s right Dax, My OS is Windows Vista
ok Quang, how about you download the Unlock_code.bin directly to the data folder? This seems to be a problem more with your PC OS than the unlock tool!
ok, I’ll try with windows 7 on my desktop pc. I’ll let you know if it works. thanks for your reply.
same issue with windows 7,
download and right click on Unlock_code.bin file to select copy, then open ‘data’ folder from the tool kit, with cursor in the ‘data’ folder I right click to select paste, but there’s no paste option too. On the video instruction, I noticed he open the Unlock_code. bin file then copy to ‘data’ folder. Do I have to open the Unlock_code.bin then copy & paste to ‘data’ folder? I tried that and got an error windows can’t open this file…thanks for your reply.
I decided to do a separate step by unlock bootloader first from http://www.htcdev.com website, then downloaded the tool and flash recovery then root, and it worked. thanks.
Has anyone tried this method, and can confirm whether it works as the article states
The method works 100% and you can check out the source link to see the comments left by the users.
Confirmed it worked on mine perfectly
That’s awesome !
Keep coming back for more goodies for your smartphone 🙂
confirmed worked for me
glad we could help, Kevin!
was soo confused at first since im just a big newbie on the sidelines lol. i was getting an image of a smartphone device and a red triangle everytime i tried to get into the recovery but that was up until i flashed the custom recovery then tried again and worked flawlessly!!! u know what sucks sometimes is that getting the job done is the easiest thing the hard part is figuring out what the hell ur doing but once you know everything is fast and easy
Yep, glad we could help you!
I also did not have a proper reco mode and had to add the TWRP. The SuperSU.zip was hidden in /emmc.
Alright, I’ve gotten the bootloader unlocked, installed TWRP, and gone through Hansoon2000 app. Yet, I cannot get the phone rooted. When I select Perm Root from the app, in the cmd prompt it says that it cannot copy the supersu.zip file … permission denied. I have an sd card in there. I have tried manually moving the supersu.zip file to the sd card, but to no avail. Any ideas on how to get me rooted?
can you please please make a tutorial for HTC AMAZE 4g. Im running on 4.0.3 can you make a rooting video please.
I dont understand the whole “bootloader unlocked” part. please help.
Do u have an unrooting method for the amass 4g in case I want to unroot it?
i meant amaze not amass. sorry
failed to copy ‘Su/SuperSU.zip’ to ‘/sdcard/SuperSU.zip’: Permission denied

Will it work on unbranded amaze 4g bcoz I have an asian htc amaze … ????
Harry, do not try it on any other device than the one it is written for as you may end up with a great-looking paperweight if you do! 🙂
