How to Get Android 6.0 on Your Nexus Device Right Now (Video)

Android 6.0 aka Marshmallow was finally announced at Google I/O last week and now, as per the usual, it’s available as a flushable image on Google’s website for all their Nexus devices.

Essentially there are two ways to upgrade your phone to Android Marshmallow, you can wait for the OTA (snore) or you can flash it yourself when the factory image becomes available. For other manufacturers, the former is really the only way since they don’t always release the factory image (or release it after the OTA goes out), but with Google’s own Nexus line, that factory image is available on the developer section of their site within a week of it being announced.

If you happen to have a Nexus device, are super impatient for new OS versions – like I am – and just want to get Marshmallow on your device ASAP. I put together a little video on how you can flash it yourself.

I. Before You Begin

1. I’m going to use Windows to do this as most people use it, but you can do it on Mac in the same way just following the Mac ADB tutorial in the link below for setting up ADB, Terminal instead of command prompt, and putting “./” in front of the commands I have below going into command prompt an you’ll be all set.

2. One of the downsides of flashing a system image manually, is that it will also erase the data on your device so be sure to back everything up first before continuing.

II. Setup ADB & Download the Android Marshmallow Factory Image

1. Head to my tutorial on how to setup ADB in the easiest way possible, follow it until you can see your device’s serial number in ADB and then return here to continue.

2. Head to the Android developer site and download the factory image for your specific Nexus device and save it to your desktop.

3 Unzip the factory image by right-clicking it and selecting Extract All.

4. Copy and paste all the files from inside the newly extracted folder into the folder that was created during the ADB setup process (this is the folder with adb.exe and fastboot.exe inside, it must be inside the same folder as those to work).

III. Enable USB Debugging on the Phone

You should have done these steps in the ADB setup tutorial but just in case.

1. On the phone, head to Settings > About and tap on Build Number repeatedly until it says you are a developer.

2. Tap back and then go to Developer Options and turn on USB Debugging and OEM Unlock.

3. Plug the phone in and let the drivers install. If you have issues with getting the drivers to install, head back to the ADB tutorial.

IV. Flash Android Marshmallow onto Your Nexus

1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder where adb and fastboot are again.

2. Hold down shift on your keyboard and right-click in any blank area in that folder and select Open Command Window Here.

3. Type the following into the command prompt with hitting enter at the end of each line:

adb reboot bootloader

4. Wait for the device to reboot (if it says device not found, again, see the ADB tutorial from above).

5. Once it reboots, type the following into command prompt with hitting enter at the end of each line:

fastboot oem unlock

6. After you do that it’ll reboot and there will be a confirmation screen on the phone. Use the volume buttons to navigate and power to select and choose Yes that you would like the bootloader unlocked.

7. After it reboots again, open the adb folder again and double click the flash-all.bat file and wait for it to flash.

8. This will start the flashing process so wait for that to finish and for the device to reboot and be careful not to interrupt the device while this is going on.

After that, you’re all set and running the latest version of Android!

Manually Flashing the Update if You Get an Error

So that’s how it should work, but sometimes, there’s an issue. I actually had one myself so thought I’d post how I got around it here in case any of you ran into the same one.

I got an error in the command prompt saying the system.img didn’t exist so I decided to flash it manually (along will all the parts of the update to be safe). So watch the end of the video for how to take care of that particular error.

Let me know in the comments below if it worked for you or if you had any issues!
