How To: Root Your HTC Magic (OBSOLETE)
PLEASE NOTE! This method is obsolete! Please refer to the newer Rooting/Loading Custom ROM methods on our site:
Root, then Load a Custom ROM, Apps2SD/Hero etc.
If you have an HTC Magic and want to gain root access so you can load new ROMs (and get new features) follow the steps below. PLEASE Note!!!!! -You MUST first check what motherboard you have as there are 2 different methods (one for each motherboard version) and using the wrong one for you motherboard will BRICK YOUR PHONE!
PLEASE NOTE THAT AS OF RIGHT NOW NEITHER OF THESE METHODS WILL WORK ON A MYTOUCH, USE THIS PROCEDURE FOR THE MYTOUCH INSTEAD
1. How to check your motherboard version:
I. Turn off your phone II. Turn the phone on by either holding down the volume down button and power button at the same time OR by holding down the back button and power button at the same time. III. When the screen comes up, it should say somewhere on the first line either 32A or 32B. THAT is your motherboard version. Continue with the appropriate procedure.
32A Procedure (HTC Branded, Rogers)-
1. Download these 3 files:
Android SDK
Daldroid-Recovery.img (32A)
Magic Rooted ROM (32A)
2. Once you download the SDK, extract the SDK files to “C:\AndroidSDK”
3. Connect your device to the computer and mount the SD card by selecting mount on the notification that comes up on the phone.
4. Save the daldroid-recovery.img and HofoROM zip files to the topmost folder of the SD card. Rename the Hofo zip file to update.zip
5.ALSO save the daldroid-recovery.img to the AndroidSDK\tools folder on your computer.
6. Unplug the device.
7. Go to Menu, Settings, Applications, Development then check USB Debugging.
8. Turn off the device.
9. Turn on the device by holding down the power and back button at the same time until the skateboarding Android screen comes up and says FASTBOOT just under the initial system information.
10. Plug the phone into the computer via USB. Make sure that it says FASTBOOT USB instead of FASTBOOT now.
11. Your computer should say installing drivers right now (if this is the first time you have connected the phone in fastboot mode). Hopefully your computer will automatically install them, but if it doesn’t then use this guide from Google to install the drivers.
12. Goto the Start menu type cmd into the run section of the start menu and hit enter.
13. Â Type the following into the command dos prompt on the computer (the black screen with white letters that just opened) while the phone is connected through USB, hitting enter at the end of the line:
cd\
cd androidsdk\tools\
fastboot devices
14. You should see a serial number pop up and the word fastboot to the right of it. This means that your USB drviers are all set up correctly and you can continue. If you do NOT see this, then you need to start over or Google for how to set up the USB drivers correctly (this will help).
15. If the serial number and the word fastboot next to it popped up, then go back to the command prompt on the computer and type
fastboot boot daldroid-recovery.img
16. Once the phone boots up into the recovery screen, select Apply sdcard:update.zip from the options.
17. Once the phone reboots, you have root and are running a custom ROM already (I choose the most stable for you)!
18 (ADDED TO MAKE LOADING ROMS EASIER). Plug the phone back into the computer (while it is on the regular home screen) and then type in the command (assuming you did not touch it once you were done):
adb devices
A serial number should come up if the computer recognizes your phone.
Then type:
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/daldroid-recovery.img
DONE! This will make the recovery image stay on the phone so you can load roms without having to do this whole procedure again.
Now, the next optional step is to load a different custom ROM of your choosing. Goto our next video for how to load a custom ROM and for a list of our favorites.
32B Procedure (Vodafone, O2)-
1. Download these 3 files:
Android SDK
Recovery-new.img.zip (32B)
Magic Rooted ROM (32B) (UPDATED LINK – 08.25.09)
2. Once you download the SDK, extract the SDK files to “C:\AndroidSDK”
3. Connect your device to the computer and mount the SD card by selecting mount on the notification that comes up on the phone.
4. Unzip the Recovery-new.img.zip file and then save the Recovery-new.img file (the file that was inside the .zip) and Rootme-signed.zip (do not unzip this file, save it as is) files to the SD card (not in any subfolder). Rename the rootme-signed.zip to update.zip
5.ALSO save the Recovery-new.img to the AndroidSDK\tools folder on your computer.
15. If the serial number and the word fastboot next to it popped up, then go back to the command prompt on the computer and type
fastboot boot recovery-new.img
16. Once the phone boots up into the recovery screen, select Apply sdcard:update.zip from the options.
17. Once the phone reboots, you have root and are running a custom ROM already.
18 (ADDED TO MAKE LOADING ROMS EASIER). Plug the phone back into the computer (while it is on the regular home screen) and then type in the command (assuming you did not touch it once you were done):
adb devices
A serial number should come up if the computer recognizes your phone.
Then type:
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-new.img
DONE! This will make the recovery image stay on the phone so you can load roms without having to do this whole procedure again.
Now, the next optional step is to load a different custom ROM of your choosing. Goto our next video for how to load a custom ROM and for a list of our favorites.
Reported Issues
Issue: When I open the command prompt and do step 13 and type fastboot devices, nothing comes up.
Solution: You need to load the drivers, redo steps 2 – 10. Then make sure you do step 11 and click the link for more instructions for loading the usb drivers if you are having issues.
Issue: I loaded the ROM and everything worked, but now I can’t type anything.
Solution: Goto Menu > Settings >Locale & text then click Select locale.
Select your location/language.
Go back and click on Touch input and make sure it is correct for your language.
Go back and click on Tutorial and the keyboard should come up. Close it and you should have the keyboard in all apps now.
Issue: When I get into the recovery screen on the computer and try to push the Apply SDCard Update.zip option it just gives me an error saying something about it can’t mount the SDcard or something?
Solution: Hit Reboot and then take out the battery from the phone.
Then take out the memory card and put it back in, then put the battery back in.
Turn on the phone by holding down the back and power key and wait until FASTBOOT comes up on the screen.
Start back at Step 15 and try again. (If it gives you the same error, repeat this solution and try again).
So can you recommend an approach for Vodafone branded Magics?
Hello,
Not yet. We are getting an HTC branded Magic in soon to do videos for that, and after that we will do some instructions for the Vodafone ones (without videos sadly unless someone wants to let us borrow their Vodafone Magic 🙂
Can the rooted Magic reset to the original factory ROM?
Hello Beneoo,
Yes, it can. You would just need the original ROM that you started with and you can then reload it same way you loaded a custom ROM.
Hi David,
Thanks for the reply. 1 last one … what is the ROM name for the original one? is this available in your home page?
Thanks.
Hello Beneoo,
There is different original ROMs for the Magic since there is a different ROM for each carrier. We have the Rogers Original ROM on the site under Downloads.
Do you have the Rogers Magic, or a different one?
orh.. my is full HTC model for AsiaPac market… doubt there will be the ROM.
Nevertheless, thanks David for the response.
Hello Beneoo,
Actually… the AsiaPac model is going to be 32A most likely (which means you can follow the 32A procedures and you’re good to go). Just do the first step in the procedure real quick and check what motherboard you have, either 32A or 32B. If you have 32A go ahead and get started 🙂 And the 32A Hero ROM is in our Downloads section at the top right (just make sure you follow the rooting procedure first then goto the ROM procedure).
If you mean an original ROM for the Magic, you might have to do some searching, but I promise you won’t want to go back to the regular Magic ROM after using Hero on the AsiaPac Magic (Hero runs really well since the real Hero phone has 288Mbs of RAM and the AsiaPac Magic has the same 288mbs, so runs like it was meant to 🙂
32B Procedure is needed David 🙂
C’mon buddy, make us happy. i sold my iphone and i got a htc magic vodafone and waiting for you to make it “hero” :))
Hey Fatih_Istanbul,
Ha, this weekend, I got you 🙂
Only problem is that I don’t have a 32B Magic so I’m kinda going blind. I’m going to research the differences between 32A and 32B and hopefully they are similar enough that people will be able to follow the video with only minor changes (since I cannot do a separate video without a 32B Magic). We’ll see, check back tomorrow or Sunday.
I have seen a tool called “Nandroid Backup” that is supposed to be able to make a full backup of whatever is installed on the device. You should be able to use it to backup your original ROM before trying anything else.
Hello,
CB is correct. You can when in the recovery image (the screen where you push down on the trackball to upload the Update.zip file), click on Nandroid Backup instead. Let it do the backup and then go back and click update.
Hey David!
Just ran across your site and it looks really helpful! I have T-Mobile USA’s branding of the Magic – any word on whether this root will work there as well? Haha, I sure hope so because that’s the main reason I ordered it…
Hello Israel,
Want to check your motherboard version for us and post what version it is?? Just follow the beginning of this procedure to check the motherboard and post a comment real quick and I can let you know what procedure to follow. Also going to be getting the MyTouch ourselves as soon as it comes out so we’ll do more testing etc then.
hello
I did step by step all what you say..
thanks
but at the end I get SDCARD cannot mount update.zip BAD..
I have tryed and tryed.. changed rechanged.. I pasted the update file all over my sd.. with .zip and without ( I think you forgat the .zip on your youtube video !!! )
so… what else can I do?.. and why woudnt it mount from my sdcard??
thank you so much
dave
Hello Dave,
I didn’t forget it in my video, Windows puts it in their for you automatically and if you type update.zip in there the file becomes update.zip.zip and then won’t load. See if maybe that’s what happened to you?
Hey.
I tried to do root, but after fastboot boot… my phone after reboot stops at my operator logo, and it`s just hanging… Maybe I need to take out my SIM card? I don`t know. I think I tried everything ;/. Plz reply
Hello Tapout,
Make sure that the recovery.img file is in the two places I mention in the tutorial. Then make sure you type fastboot boot [exact name of the recovery image] and hit enter. Phone should end up on a black screen with lines of text.
hey the Ulockr, 🙂
ok.. lets make order my god.. I did so many tries.. once with .zip and also without.
1.the usb drivers work cause I get the good message number after typing fastboot devices.
2.I copy into the SDcard of the phone the zip file that I get from you under “magic rooted ROM” her in your tuto. then I get a zip file named: daldroid-htcmagic1-signed that I extract with ALzip(inside there are 3 files by the way) that extracted file I put in the SDCARD and then I rename it to “update” (it didnt become.zip automaticly)
3. daldroid-recovery.img I paste into tools in the C:/ under folder Android that I created..
4. I do the fastboot and the fastboot boot daldroid-recovery.img in the little black window of commandes (first time in my life I try that.. but it worked.. I mean I am not stupid…)
5. my phone restars yes. but when I togle down to press update from SDcard I get the error. FILE IS BAD.. cannot update.. cannot open file.. or something like that. written in my phone of course.
voila..
do you think you can help me?.. what went wrong?
I am doing this for 3 days now.. sick and tired.. and it doesnt work..
help
thank you
dave
Hello dave,
You added a step that you weren’t supposed to do…
Do NOT extract the files inside the daldroid-htcmagic1-signed.zip file. Simply save it as is to your SDcard (not in any folder, simply on the SDcard) and rename it to update.zip.
thanks. about the update.zip
well I have done that now. I put the file not unzipped to the SDCARD.
did all the steps. and when pressed update it worked! phone was thinking and update from SDCARD was succesful.
YET I think my phone is not rooted.. or is it?.. how to know?..
I try to put new language fonts to it.. and still it doesnt work as if the phone is not rooted.
(when a phone is rooted once.. does it stay like that.. or when I turn it on I must do something?)
thanks again man
oh.. and people always talk about ADB..
and adb root
I was told to type adb root to see if the phone is rooted..
when I type it in the command window I get “error: device not found”
but when I do like you said, fastboot devices. I get the H-number message that according to u shows I am allright
help please…
and THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hello dave,
ADB is a command program on the computer that comes with the SDK, but I personally never use it. If you want to check root, download “Terminal” from the Market, then open the Terminal program and type SU. if it lets you continue to the next line, you have root.
ok man
but now if your steps worked. and I did the update that was succesfull. then it means for sure that my phone is in root?…
why cant I download new font for other languages then?
I have the Google Ion from the Developer’s Conference and need some help. I am unclear if the phone is able to load a rom out of the box. I checked the board and its a 32B. If you are in the NYC area I would be willing to meet up for so that you can do a video and help me out at the same time.
Hello Herb,
The procedure for 32B isn’t up yet, we’re working on getting it right without having the phone so that is why it is taking a while (don’t want to give people wrong info of course).
Unfortunately, we are in South Florida, otherwise we would love to borrow your phone.
If you want to ship it to us, we would gladly put Hero on it or whatever ROM you want for free (so long as you don’t mind us video taping the process for others of course) and we’ll even overnight it back to you. Totally up to you as I can understand why you wouldn’t want to, figured there was no harm in asking of course (someone else just did that for us to do the 32A procedure actually). Let me know and I can email you our address and a receipt proving we took the phone etc.
My HTC MAGIC comes with this SPL
HBOOT-1.33.0010 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H : CPLD-12.
Could you tell me if this would work on it?
Hello Harkeer,
Just follow the 32A procedure listed and you should be good to go. (See the 32A in what you typed? That means you have the 32A version of the motherboard).
Just a quick clarification. Since my Magic has the dreaded SPL HBOOT-1.33.0010 and there seems to plenty of warnings on the blogs about trying to root it and bricking it; could you again confirm whether this would surely work as I am a little nervous about trashing my phone?
Thanks for your help.
Hello Harkeer,
Do you have 32B motherboard then?
Mytouch is on its way. I really really hope you guys get one also. You guys are great.
Do all 32b motherboards have 192mb ram? I have the developers conference phone. Where in south florida are you? I will be in sarasota-tampa area soon. Thanks, your efforts are really appreciated.
im awaiting the arrival of my mytouch later today. the more i read the more it seems as if the t-mobile mytouch is “unrootable” as of now. apparently the SPL is different than the SPL on the other versions of the device like the HTC Magic. hopefully when the phone goes public these issues will become a thing of the past.
Hi there just wanted to ask how do I check how much MB Ram I had on my htc magic, cause I never realize that each carrier had different types. 32B motherboard
Hello Kevan,
Look it up online is the only way I know how at the moment. What version do you have? Vodafone? O2? HTC Unbranded?
Hi, i followed the procedure for 32A
I had some minor problems when i came to ‘Apply sdcard:update.zip’ but after a couple of retry s it installed the update.
‘Update successfully completed’
or something like that
I tried to download a program called ‘quick boot’ wich requirs root access (just to test if i have root) when i launch the program a box comes up saying ‘No root access.
You must have root
access to your phone
to use this software’
I also tried to find ‘Terminal’ in Market, but i cant find it, then i downloadet ‘better terminal emulator’ instead (figured a terminal is a terminal) when i type su it changes line and the symbol in front of the line change from $ to #
So i have root? If so, why dosn’t ‘quick boot’ launch?
Hope somebody can help me!
Thank’s for the guide!
I followed all the steps religiously but when I type the ‘su’ command in the Terminal, it prompted me:
su: permission denied
Does it mean that my magic is still not rooted ?
the t-mobile mytouch is a 32B motherboard. ive done some research and it looks like it cannot be rooted yet. what a bummer. i was pretty pumped to flash the HERO rom on it. but i guess it will be a little while. once the phone is readily available which im pretty sure is wednesday of this week more hackers will get their hands on it 🙂
Hi TheUnlockr
No, It’s a 32 A motherboard and the SPL is HBOOT-1.33.0010
Sapphire PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H : CPLD-12.
::sigh:: WRONG AGAIN! The Mobo is 32B I work for T-mobile and I have had the the phone for weeks as well play with the demo models…
Hmm I did just notice something even though my mobo is 32b it isn’t 1.33.0010 its 1.22.0006… Does that mean I can still try the 32a methode and be successful or am I more at risk of bricking?
Hello JinXt3r,
The motherboard is definitely 32B, this is what people have been telling us for a bit now. We are still waiting to get our hands on a MyTouch so we can do a video.
In the meantime, I would not attempt to root the MyTouch (we will most likely have a separate post for the MyTouch Rooting procedure).
Hello Dave
I tried to receive the file via bluetooth. It denies. So I tried to root the HTC magic from VODAFONE. I gone through the whole procedure. Every thing was fine but after booting okay. The htc magic automatically restarted and there was not any option that you can update the Sdcard or something which you show on the video. It appears directly Vodafone screen and I hangs Can you tell me how to root the HTC MAGIC(Vodafone)
Hello Rishit,
We will have the 32B version (Vodafone is included in that) up on the site by the end of the week.
Hi TheUnlockr
I still have root problems (see post from 1. august)
Som programs still tell me that i don’t have root, but i am able to install .apk files from SD card, and back them up to the SD card……..Is there a definitiv way to test if i have root or not?
as said earlier, if i type SU in a terminal the line changes, and the sign changes from $ to #
I also installed a Market Enabler, witch worked for a day or 2, but then just stopped working for no apparent reason…
Update to previous post
I took my chances and followed your ‘How To: Load a Custom ROM’ guide, and now i’m able to run anything (JACHeroski2.7.3-Magic32A)
Thank you for your guides!
Has anyone come across the error “remote: no access” when using fastboot on the mytouch? I recently got one from tmobile and have been looking into rooting it. When I root will the phone lose tmobile warranty (if anyonevknows) or is there a way to wirelessly tether without rooting?
Is the 32B version for the mytouch safe to use yet?
Hello What?
I really thought I made it big enough at the top of the post lol…
LOL. I saw that but wasn’t sure how up to date that was. Sorry.
HBOOT-1.33.0010 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H : CPLD-12

Have I bricked my phone?
Please help !!!!!!!!!!!
okay I’m having the same issue as Con, I get the FAILED (remote: not allowed) every time I run the fastboot boot recovery-new.img
I’m trying to root a 32B Google MyTouch Branded phone. Any help you can give me to fix this problem would be really appreciated.
I wish to know for sure if the above rooting method will work for my HTC Magic – India Airtel Version.

Problems here.. got a 32A, followed your steps. at forst I got sdcard not mouted, after a few attempts it worked and everything seemed to go okay.. So I reboot the fone, it’s stuck at the logo screen :s What to do?!
Hey guys , great job with this,… i ordered the mytouch 3g, n i rly want the hero ROM on it, n im just wndering if it will work?
NVM the last comment lol,
I got as far as updating the device.. i have windows vista and i went to device manager and when i tried to update device using the amd64 one it just popped up and said this device is using the best driver and didnt give me the option to upgrade anyways.. i have a windows 64bit computer
also when your video first starts and you do the vol/down power to see what version you run… you dont say what to do to your phone from that screen.. wasnt sure if i had to power off or use HBOOT with trackball or what..
same here efex.. got to the last part says reboot and your rooted now im still on ROGERS screen.. how long should it take
Seems I have the same problem as efex, for how long should I wait before the system has reboted after having rooted?
Use this daldroid-htcmagic1-signed.zip ROM instead of rootme-signed.zip. It should work and avoid the logo hang problem. Try to google for it.
i had faced similar problem and was resolved by using daldroid-htcmagic1-signed.zip!
And i have a problem to…
when i enter a “apply sdcard:update.zip” then…
E:Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E:Can’t mount SDCARD:update.zip
What can i do for this ?
Thank you
I was on the t-mobile forum they have a post on how to root & load hero rom to the my touch 3G. wanted to know if this information was correct. Could you guys check it out & let us know if it works??
hello i got the new mytouch 3g from tmobile and my rom version is 32b but it seems like i cant make it work.please can you help me because i really wanna root my mytouch and put a hero rom in it.thank you so much.
Hello JC,
Read the bold writing at the beginning of post.
Something is horribly wrong.. I’m also stuck on the logo screen (Rogers)… seems like there are a lot of us lately… perhaps one of the source files that we download has been changed on the other end screwing us up???
I did everything u said but after finishing instalation of update zip when i try to reboot system it wont worki reapet process several time and result is same.Plz need help
Thank you
i never got past my hang on rogers screen after root procedure.. so what i did.. not sure if its recomended.. is i got the jachero rom from here and put my sd card in computer added it there and went to fastboot usb and did same daldroid.img but with jachero on sd card and it booted up fine to hero.. so not sure what will happen later but right now im running hero fine
Hello!
Like Martin above, I have a UK Vodafone HTC Magic with a 32B motherboard. I haven’t tried the process yet, and can’t quite work out whether it “should” work with a UK phone. Should it?
Many thanks for all the amazing work and the great videos!
Monu
ive been following the exciting news over at XDA and htcpedia the past 24 hours and im pretty thrilled that the mytouch has been rooted. i keep checking back to see if you guys have a video up for it because ill be honest…im lost! i read for hours about all the steps necessary in rooting a mytouch and its pretty much over my head. i already tried creating a gold card and i wasnt successful. i hope you guys post a video soon for us noobs. your videos seem pretty thorough and in depth so i think ill just wait for you guys rather than try to proceed further on my own.
HELLO EVERYONE WAITING FOR THE MYTOUCH ROOT!
XDA has it done, we are getting a MYTOUCH tomorrow and will do the video for you guys ASAP!
hey man wats up i have a my touch 3g with t mobile and it i was trying this and it was all good until i get to step 15 i put:fastboot boot recovery-new.img and then it says fail and because remote dont allow it or someting if u can help me i will thank u
Hello Bryuliro,
Read the top of the post:
They just got it to work though, but we are trying to get a MyTouch in today so we can do the video, when it goes up it will be a separate post (it is a different procedure for rooting the MyTouch).
thank you!! i know ill appreciate it! can you do us a favor and be very specific about the whole gold card idea? lol. i just spent another hour trying to get that made. i think i found the error. apparently i didnt install the android apk BEFORE plugging in my device so it just used the standard driver and now i cant go back.
hey man thanks for working on the my touch,is a nice device but is too much like the g1 but with ur help is going to be better
hey theunlockr
I keep getting the FAILED (Rmote:not allowed) every time i run fastboot boot recovery-new.img do you know if mytouch can be rooted yet ? becuase my sister she wants so badly the hero rom
Hello Rommel and EVERYONE TRYING TO ROOT THE MYTOUCH WITH THIS METHOD,
Read the big letters at the top of the post lol:
We will have a separate procedure for the MyTouch posted (hopefully tomorrow if I can get my hands on a MyTouch by the end of today).
Will this work on the ROGERS Magic?
do you have to update the SPL or Radio when doing this?
thank you so much man
Follwed the instructions on my rogers magic. Everything worked fine and than it keeps getting stuck on the rogers splash screen. From reading above I should use a different file than the rootme-signed. How do I get a new update rom on my card, when I can’t get past the splashscreen.
nevermind, I used a sd card reader and changed the rom file downloaded from this site to the hero rom from xda and than rand fastboot and loaded the hero rom
I have Vodafone branded HTC Magic (New Zealand) and just did the 32B procedure, after sucessful update it HANGS at the boot logo. !! I didn’t do back up of rom first unfortunatley. Anyone have any suggestions? I’ve read somewhere than you need to a full factory reset and put sdcard back to stock before updating the magic. But others have done this procedure just fine?
In the mean time I’m going to try and flash to hero, then wait for a rom that works. Anyone have a factory vodafone rom?
I’m also stuck on the logo screen (htc magic branded). Please i need help. I repeat procedure several times but nothing happened plz help.
they said we can now root the my touch 3g
hey the Unlockr sorry to bother you umm i was wondering if you got your hands on the mytouch if you did when you think that you will have the video
update: I updated my bricked HTC Magic with a HTC Hero rom – the “Fatal1ty_Hero-Full_v1.4-signed” version. It now boots on this fine and has root. I can’t get back to magic. Andrija: perhaps try a different ROM by same method? I guess you didn’t back up first either?
Note to author: how about a big disclaimer: back up first because plenty of people are getting a bricked phone.
Do Not use magic rooted Rom it doesn’t work on htc brand. yon need to use daldroid-htcmagic1-signed.zip!
I had the some problem with the phone it did not boot up.
The unlockr please look into this and let us know.
You are the man. Thank You for all your work.
i hope you guys got your hands on a mytouch because i think im going to wait for your video. i keep trying my hand here and i made a goldcard but i get the feeling i did it incorrectly but im not quite sure. pretty terrified of bricking my phone so im hesitant to go any further because im a total noob when it comes to rooting and HTC devices. would hate to have to pay full price for a new mytouch!
can this work with a mytouch? since the mytouch is the same as a htc magic. i believe.
Hello Matthew,
There is big bold writing in the beginning of the post… Read it lol
We will have the MyTouch method up shortly (working on it as we speak).
lol sorry. i just watched the video and skipped down to the comments. 🙂 thanks.
WORK FASTER!!! (cracking the whip)
Just kidding, we all appreciate all of you hard work. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Hey Bear,
LOL, ran into a lot of issues with the rooting of the MyTouch (the processes on XDA are pretty vague). Finally figured them out and got everything I figured out into the video after almost an entire day of working on it lol.
VIDEO IS DONE, INSTRUCTIONS ARE DONE, EDITING IS DONE, JUST WAITING FOR THEM TO UPLOAD TO YOUTUBE AS WE SPEAK 🙂
yess!!! man i was about to return the my touch but u came to the rescue 🙂 thank you man
has the video been uploaed yet? I’m patiently waiting so i can root my mytouch
Hello BL@Z3,
It is being uploaded as we speak… takes a few hours to upload sadly.
There are also 2 parts so everyone knows (not the easiest process).
I really really admire all your hard work and effort that you do for everyone else. Thank you, Justin(mytouch user)
Hello Justin,
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
wheres the instrutions because they are not uploaded on this page?
Hello BL@Z3,
It’ll be it’s own separate post “How To Root Your MyTouch 3G” and then another one for “How to Load Hero onto Your MyTouch 3G”. I’m uploading the videos to youtube as we speak soon as they are done I will publish the post with the instructions and video at the same time.
Thank you TheUnlockr,
I appreciate you taking out the time to do all of this. Can’t wait to see the Hero rom on my mytouch
hi,i root mi magic, but not work.I did everything as in vidio, but not start, appears only htc magic on screem.cant you helpe me unlockr?i am from switezerland.thanks
Hi Unlockr
I made everything by your instractions but something isn’t working!!!
first – the file that I download is “rootme-signed” and not “aldroid-htcmagic1-signed” like you show on the video?! how can I find this file?
when I finished the process the mobile write “E:can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E:can’t mount SDCARD:update.zip Installation aborted.”
what should I do???
thanks,
Yonathan
Hello Yonathan,
If it says that in the recovery screen, just click the Wipe option in the recovery screen. After it wipes, then hit the Apply Update.zip option again.
Regardless of what the file is called, rename it to update.zip (make sure your computer doesn’t rename it to update.zip.zip on accident), then put it on the SD card and do what I said above.
Hi again,
first thanks a lot for your kind help to all the people here!!! that’s really appreciable.
I made exactly what you wrote on your comment and it worked!!!!
BUT 🙁 my Magic is’t operating since then… I have just HTC MAGIC logo on the screen and nothing happened already long time (30 min +-)
please let me know what should i do now…
thanks,
Yonathan
Hi,
Same problem on a 32B here 🙁
It stays at the Vodafone screen startup screen and it wont come up again.
Please help
please refer to my last comment!!!
Hi again,
I tried almost every option again and again…
the mobile show HTC MAGIC on the screen and don’t move on…
it’s not working at all since yesterday anf I really hope that you can help me with this…
thanks,
Yonathan
I see a lot of people have problems with the HTC Magic does not boot, I had the exact same problem (used the rootme-signed.zip) so I did the same thing as Anthony suggested. I downloaded daldroid-htcmagic1-signed.zip from here:
http://www.filestube.com/f70af283fbcab28403ea/go.html
I copied renamed the file to update.zip and copied the file into my microsd card (I used my old nokia cause I’m missing a proper card reader).
I then went back to the fastboot screen. Ran fastboot from the cmd, clicked wipe data, and afterthat I ran the apply sd card update.zip over again.
It worked great.
Like Kristian i also managed to get a fresh ROM on my SD card, by the way you can download other .img files so you dont have to rename it constantly to update.zip but select the zip file from a list
Hello Maarten,
That is true, I’ve tried to use the recovery images that have that “choose .zip” option and they sometimes don’t pick up all the .zips on the card so I just rename it to update.zip, faster if that happens.
download this ROM here:
(from the link of XDA developers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538633)
This is an Uber ROM with google voice search etc. Working fabulous!
How long will it take to restar after that all? My phone starts up since 15 minutes!
Is that normal?
Hello Da Michl,
It can take a good 10-15 minutes. If it takes long than that OR if you see one of the logos looping over and over. Just take out the battery and do the update.zip step again with Wiping beforehand.
I have rogers HTC magic.
loaded this ROM onto my phone
http://www.filestube.com/f70af283fbcab28403ea/go.html
since the other one left me at the startup screen… till i wiped the data and loaded this rom.
I can’t seem to find a network connection anymore.. please assist.
Hello Jon,
You need to goto Settings > Wireless > Data Network > APN. Then Add the APN that your phone company uses manually.
sweet thanks man
hey unlockr i have a problem i install the drivers like u said it says i already have it i go to fast boot screen and i got it tells me to install the drivers for the android 1.0 device
I don’t suppose you have a tutorial on here somewhere to save and launch applications from your SD card eh?
I checked out the g1 tutorial.. but it doesn’t work for the magic :S
please advise.
still using this hero rom fro my 32a.. works great.. just wondering why the rootme.zip still here.. with so many getting stuck on rogers screen.. also a little confusing here with some people using 32b/mytouch and 32a all commenting in same section.. botttom line Mr Unlockr.. nice work .. realize you are busy helping mytouch people out but just curious about the rootme file still being here
I’ve got a 32A motherboard and i’ve followed to 32A procedure, doing fine until
16. Once the phone boots up into the recovery screen, select Apply sdcard:update.zip from the options.
i select the apply sdcard:update.zip option but i receive this error:
E:Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E:Can’t mount SDCARD:update.zip
any ideas?
I’ve tried to root my Vodafone HTC Magic (32B motherboard). I followed the instructions as stated above, however when I rebooted my phone it would not load and froze on the vodafone icon screen. Does anyone have any ideas out to fixed this?
Hi,
I’m trying to root my wifes phone and while I’m writing the commend: fastboot boot daldroid-recovery.img
I get this: downloading ‘boot.img’… failed (remote: not allow)
any ideas???
thanks,
Yonathan
Hello!
I’m having some trouble rooting on the Mac OSX. I can’t seem to get my phones serial number to show in the Terminal after typing in
cd\
cd androidsdk\tools\
fastboot devices
I realize that the USB drivers aren’t needed for OSX (after looking at Google’s website) and that there is a different SDK to download for Mac. I think my problem is that I am not typing in the right commands into Terminal (which is Apple’s version of MS DOS, right?).
Has anyone rooted their Magic on an Apple that may be able to offer some tips or assistance?
I’m having the exact same issue as Red77
“I’ve tried to root my Vodafone HTC Magic (32B motherboard). I followed the instructions as stated above, however when I rebooted my phone it would not load and froze on the vodafone icon screen. Does anyone have any ideas out to fixed this?”
Any suggestions ?
i have the same problem with zachary ,
mybe i have to wipe the old rom in my phone before to applie update.zip ?
Hello Nabil,
You should always do a Wipe before Applying the update.zip helps a lot.
please help…first i root my htc magic 32a,and work great with anotther roms.but i am idiote and make one update from htc,,,,,after update i cant install another rom,now i try the same steps to make another root, and when I get come to fastboot boot daldroid-recovery.img,i have this…dowloading ‘boot.img’…failed ….thanks to all
Hello M.V.Sardinha,
That sounds like the SPL you are using is blocking the recovery image… or the phone is not connected properly.
Type this and see if a serial number comes up:
fastboot devices
if it doesn’t you need to reinstall the drivers.
Hi guys with HANGING VODAFONE SCREEN

Hello Liri,
No, you need to load a custom ROM first, then you will have root access. So just goto the next video and follow those steps.
please help. i have magic 32B i do all steps, but there did not appear recovery screen. so i turn off my phone and hold down home and power button and then show me a reecovery scren. i choose apply and restart the phone. the problem is that, when i turn on my phone he stop and all the time is logo of vodafone on red background.they won t go on. help please and sorry of my english 🙂

Hi..my new vodafone magic came along with hero rom. because it was freezing often, i reset the phone and since then its not passing HTC window. I tried many rooting method but it gives err no signature(704 files)..verification failed.
I tried the above mentioned step, i got serial number after typing command in cmd. But wen it fastboot, it freezes at vodafone logo and doesnt pass. I tried manually installing update.zip by heloding home+power but again same err: no signature.
Plz help..this is my new cell 2 days old 🙁
Hello RR,
Can you get into recovery mode? What recovery mode is showing? Amon Ra or Cyanogens?
If so just download a different Hero ROM, rename it to update and put it on the SD card, then do Wipe Data and Apply Update.zip
if you get error with “E:Can’t mount SDCARD:update.zip”
just waiting android is reading SDcard in progress
i wait 2 min and try to update again it work.
thank all
solved
I tried rooting my Rogers HTC Magic yesterday and I got the “failed” error when I was applying the backup. I researched it a bit from the links provided and it says that because I did the official HTC Rogers update (I’m still on cupcake though) the rooting process doesn’t work.
Is someone working on a way to root the phone (32A) even when it has the official HTC/Rogers update applied?
Francis,
You are doing an obsolete procedure. Read the bold writing at the top.
When you get to the right procedure it will tell you in the before you begin that you need to downgrade if you have donut and provides the link to do so. Good Luck!
Sorry. My mistake. The actual message I got was “Could not run command” and according to the FlashRec site my firmware is patched. Is there a way around this?
Hello,
can you please reload the rooted rom 32A.
Thanks
Hey everyone, im new to this. I have a tmobile htc mytouch 3g (G2), and the problem is that i cannot get pass my home screen for the htc. all it does is stay on the green screen saying HTC my touch. it dosent turn off or anything. does anyone or “theunlockr” know whats going on? please let me know.
Chicken,
Read the bold writing at the top of this post. Its obsolete. Goto the How To UnRoot the MyTouch Procedure, follow that. Then do the How To Root the MyTouch/G1 in One Click procedure and then Load a Custom ROM.
