How to Unroot the LG G5 (All Models) (Video)

If you are done messing around with rooting your LG G5 or if it’s just acting up frankly, you can unroot the LG G5 pretty easily and get it back to completely stock.

We’ll be using LG’s own flashing tool and their stock firmware files, each is specific to each version of the G5. You simply flash it on to the phone using the tool, and viola, phone boots back up and is the way you got it out of the box. Here’s how to unroot the G5.

Before You Begin

1. You will need a Windows computer to do this as the flashing tool is a Windows program.
2. This will completely erase your G5, so be sure to back anything up you want to keep.

Download the LG UP Flashing Program

1. If you don’t already have it from the rooting tutorial, download the LG Up and the LG Drivers and the LG DLL for your device from here.
2. Double-click all of them and install them on to your computer.

Download the LG G5 Stock Firmware

1. Head to this forum post on XDA where a resourceful reader has put together a pretty comprehensible list of stock firmware files thankfully.
2. Download the .kdz file for your specific version of the G5 (do NOT flash the wrong version) and save it to your desktop.
3. Right-click the LG Up program that was installed after you double-clicked the LG UP Installer above and open it as an administrator.
4. Turn off your phone by removing the battery, waiting 5 seconds and putting it back in.
   
5. Then hold down volume up and keep holding it while you plug it in to the computer via the USB-C cable (if you need a USB-C to USB cable, you can get one on Amazon here). You can let go of the volume button when you see Download Mode on the screen.
   
6. In the LG Up program you should now see the phone in the table at the top (if you don’t the drivers aren’t installed properly), click the BIN file section below and click the three dot icon at the right.
7. Choose the KDZ file you downloaded from the XDA thread and then click Start to begin it flashing.
   
8. When it’s done, the phone is now on the stock firmware and ready to go.

Relock the Bootloader (Optional)

Now, if you want to get rid of the message when you boot up saying the software cannot be checked for corruption (which means you unlocked the bootloader), you can relock the bootloader.

1. Head to Settings > General > About Phone > Software info > and tap build number repeatedly until you get a message saying you are a developer.
   
2. Head to Settings > General > Developer Options > Turn On USB Debugging (if it’s grayed out, unplug it from the USB, do it, then replug it in).
   
3. Plug the phone in via the USB to the computer.
4. You should have already done this if your bootloader is unlocked, but if not, please head to my How to Setup ADB tutorial, do that and come back here once done.
5. Find the c:/adb/ folderin file explorer that was installed from the step before and hold shift on the keyboard and right-click anywhere blank in there and select Open Command Window Here.
   
6. In the command window, type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:
   adb reboot bootloader
   fastboot oem lock
   
7. Then follow the steps on the phone to relock the bootloader.

Conclusion

Boom, back to stock and you can sell it, send it in for warranty, or just start over and reroot the thing. Hope that helps some of you and please let me know in the comments below!
