New Windows Phone 7 Jailbreak Hack Coming Soon
So by now most people know about the ChevronWP7 jailbreak tool that came out a while ago and then was taken down by it’s developer as a sort of peace offering to begin talks with Microsoft about “facilitating homebrew development”. Well, it would seem that others are finally stepping up to the challenge.
Developer Julien Shapman announced to the blog WinRumors that he is currently working on a new Windows Phone 7 jailbreaking tool. He claims his tool will also one up the ChevronWP7 tool in that in will not only allow sideloading of app but also let you explore the phone’s filesystems, add your own ringtones, and let you manage your phone’s applications. All things I’m sure a lot of Windows Phone 7 tinkerers/users might like the ability to do.
He hasn’t released this tool yet, he says, because he is waiting for Microsoft to release their update to Windows Phone 7 due out in February. Why the wait? Well, he doesn’t want Microsoft to fix the exploit he uses for his jailbreaking tool and put it in the February update to render his tool useless (requiring him to find a new exploit etc). Releasing it right after would allow more people to use it before Microsoft sends out their next update, whenever that would be.
Also another developer, George Hotz (aka GeoHot), the original jailbreaker of the iPhone way back when, announced this week that he would begin working on jailbreaking Windows Phone 7 devices. The interesting bit of that story is that Microsoft responded to him by offering him a free device and telling him to “let dev creativity flourish”. Have to say it’s nice to see a company embrace jailbreaking instead of wasting tons of money trying to block it.
I’m personally glad to see this being a huge advocate for “unlocking your device’s true potential” (after all it’s your device, right?). Who’s excited?
