Nexus One may not get Ice-Cream Sandwich 4.0 – Google
The Galaxy Nexus will come with Ice-Cream Sandwich and things are afoot to get the 4.0 update ASAP to the Nexus S, but what about the original Nexus One? The answer to this question is not good news, as this aging device isn’t on the list to get Google’s latest software. The company feels that the handset’s CPU and GPU aren’t built to handle Android 4.0 the way it’s supposed to be handled – we were expecting something of this sort, but it’s still disheartening to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.
Having said that, Nexus One has seen a million (okay, not a million, but quite a lot) custom ROMs built on various versions of Android from Eclair to the latest release of Gingerbread, which gives reason for N1 users to put their faith in devs hoping for some kind of a 4.0 port as soon as the source code is released. We’ll let you know as soon as that happens.
Interestingly, someone has already managed to make the 4.0 update work with the N1 already and is showing it off on YouTube. According to the author, the ROM is built on the SDK alone without the source code, which means the usability might be spotty. The device seems to be running fine to our eyes in the video above, but you be the judge of that.
