Nexus Q: Google’s Android Powered Content Hub

So this little sphere is an odd looking device; extremely futuristic looking, no screen, no input methods of any kind, etc. Nonetheless, it is a neat concept.

Google plans to have you take this Android-powered device and plug it into your living room TV and speakers and have it stream music, videos, etc. from YouTube and the Google Play store. How do you control it? You can then use any Android device (still need to confirm if ANY is true in that statement of if it’s only Jellybean devices etc.) by tapping on it to sync with it and use your device as a remote.

You can also use NFC to tap your device to it and it will grab your Google Play content from the cloud (not from your actual device) and be able to play it directly on your TV. Once more, your friends (with Android devices) can tap their device to it as well and add their library of music to the party.

The media streaming device will cost $299 from the Google Play store and will also ship mid-July like the Nexus 7 tablet.

Anyone want one of these? Or is your Xbox and Windows 8 good enough?

  1. I have really high hopes for the Q. Lately apple has been real shady with their lawsuits. The Q is unique and apple can finally sit their ass down. Google also got it right by manufacturing in the U.S. I know I sound bitter with apple, but with the current economic conditions I am more mindful of my purchases. I’m also curious/excited to see what developers will do with this thing!!

    1. Firstly, thanks for joining in the conversation on the site. Secondly, I agree. I like the Q although the price is a bit steep (but that’ll change). As far as patents are concerned, I think the bigger problem here is the current state of the patent system more so than all these lawsuits. The system doesn’t work right and needs to be improved for sure.
As for developers, oh, you know there will be some awesome apps for the Q only…

  2. Patent Reform! or not…
The system does need work. The more I become familiar with open source, the more I appreciate this spirit of peer review. I wont deny apple makes great product. I stood in line for the iPad 2 for three hours. But their attacks on other mobile operating systems stalls development.

    1. Ha, yeah not any time soon I’m sure lol

I agree, and what makes it more ridiculous to me is that they are all in bed with each other (Samsung makes iPhone displays, Apple sues Samsung, Microsoft owns stock in Apple, Apple attacks Microsoft, etc. etc.)

      1. hmmmm… I am rethinking my nexus q is unique statement. Everything is borrowed and there really isnt anything unique about these companies.
