Over the Air DTV Coming to Phones?

DTV Antenna

So ever wish there was one more device you could cram into a cell phone? Well how about your TV?

The ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) just approved Mobile DTV broadcast standard. This means that manufacturer’s can start creating Mobile DTV receivers (since there is a standard and they know that their device will be able to pick up the signals being broadcast correctly).

Samsung has also announced along side the ATSC’s standard, their new DTV receiver (smart marketing there, Sammy).

Devices with these receivers will be able to watch local programming being broadcast for free. Same way your old rabbit ears TV used to work, except digital 🙂

The Open Mobile Video Coalition, which broadcast 800 stations, says it is preparing Mobile DTV programming as we speak.

Great, one more excuse for me to continue to stare at my cell phone…
