How to Root the Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9506/SHV-E330S)

Now that you have a custom recovery installed on your GT-I9506, rooting is just a matter of few minutes.  Use the guide below and you should be done in no time.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  You should have ClockworkMod Recovery installed for this procedure to work.  Use our guide to help you with this and then come back here to continue.

2.  This guide is designed to work only with the GT-I9506/SHV-E330S variants of the Samsung Galaxy S4; do not try this on any other variant as you may end up with a bricked device.

3.  Charge your device to 75% or more to prevent unwanted shutdowns.

4.  Back up everything you feel is important just in case.

II.  Necessary Downloads

ROOT_E330S_I9506.zip [Download link available in this post]

III.  Rooting the Galaxy S4

1.  Connect your device to your PC and copy the ROOT_E330S_I9506.zip file to your device’s internal SD card.

2.  Disconnect your device and shut it down.

3.  Boot to recovery by pressing and holding Power + Volume Up buttons until you see the ‘Recovery Booting’ message; now, let the power button go and then release the Volume Up button.

4.  Tap on Install Zip, then Choose zip from internal SD card.  [We assume that you chose Philz Touch CWM Recovery when you flashed recovery since it is touch based and has many more features].

5.  Navigate to the location of ROOT_E330S_I9506.zip and select it, then tap on Flash Selected Files.

6.  Once the flash is complete, go back to the main menu and tap on Reboot System Now.

You are now a proud owner of a rooted Samsung Galaxy S4!

  1. Clockwork recovery does not cater for E330S. Pressing Power and volume up key just switiches phone on and off over again

    1. Press Vol Up + Home button + Power on and it will work. That worked for me, but my phone still wasn’t rooted after going through the procedure.

      1. Thanks I rooted mine I had the same trouble if you want to root still I can help you through the process it takes less than half an hour

  2. Didn’t work for me, I try going into SuperSU app and it says there is no SU binary installed. Also i installed root checker app and it says my phone is not rooted. I using SHV-E330S.

    1. Files needed. To succeed.
Philz touch 6.13.0 for kit kat or cwm 6.3.7 v5.15.0 .

      Place roo te330s_i9506 v2 and
Update super su v1.93 on phone or sim card.

      put phone into download mode
Run philz touch cwm depending on if your kit kat or not in odin

Phone will reset. Switch off phone thistime press up power and home and let go of power when phone starts to boot.

Screen may go blank as cwm boots up I get a flicker of scrambled graphics for a moment.

Select load zip do root zip first navigate back and load zip super su

When done reboot phone and load super su run it then close it then run root checker

      1. I had tried that as well, maybe I messed something up somehow. Which version of KitKat did you use? I have E330SKSUCNB3.

    2. In guessing either you havent flashed the first super user file through clockwork mod or it could be corrupt (check on install for errors). When I first opened the super user app which I down loaded from google play I also got not rooted on root checker. I went in and out if the app a few times then got a knox message in superuser su which I cant remember if I allowed or not. After which root checker showed green text and congratulations your rooted. I posted notes on xda developers under the handle summan971 search there and it will cover what I did.. hang in there its so simple when it works.

  3. I cannot find the sd card folder on my phone, and hence cannot transfer the zip. How do I solve this?

    1. What happens when you connect your device to your PC. Don’t you at least see the device logo listed on your computer?
If you still don’t find it when you connect your device to your PC, you could download it directly from your phone’s browser. Give that a try and get back to us!

          1. “reboot system now”, “apply update from ADB”, “apply update from external storage”, “wipe data/factory reset”, “wipe cache partition”, “apply update from cache”

          2. I got the same message Ying, use “apply update from external storage” if you put the file in the base directory of your SD card, it should show up, it did for me

          3. ok… here we go…

At step 7 before you click on start, hold volume up and at the same time click start to enter CMR.

Ying, we weren’t ever entering the proper setup program – this worked, and trust me, you’ll know the difference instantly!

  4. My GT-I9506 doesn’t want to accept that CWM , I followed the steps carefully and did everything right. But when I go to recovery boot , my phone says No command , error , and then goes to probably the own recovery menu of S4.

    1. Nekta, try this: As soon as you install CWM, pull the battery (I am assuming you will have cover off before you start), put it back in and boot straight to recovery. This might make it stick!

  5. I think it rooted now but when I press supersu it says there is no SU binary installed and super su cannot instal it this is a problem if you jsut upgraded to android 4.3 (mine is 4.4.2) you need to manually re-rootconsult the relevant forums for your device
and also I got a security notice please help

  6. Hello and thanks for this tutorial.

    I have a Galaxy S4 GT-i9506 from Orange France.
I used to have Jelly Beans and was happy with it but since I upgraded to KitKat (4.4.2), I am facing the issue with the external SD-CARD as everyone 🙁 Write Access to the external SD-CARD is now blocked for all application.
So the only solution I found on the web is to Root the telephone and that’s what I am trying to do.
So i followed the 2 tutorials for the Custom Recovery and the Root.

    I have few questions:
1 – For all the steps where you ask to push Volume (up or down) and power, I have also to push the home button at the same time in order to get it work… Is it normal ?
2 – I am able to install the Custom Recovery and I chosed the Philz_Touch _CWM_6.3.7_V5.15.0_unofficial. However, when I start the phone in the recovery, I get the following error message:

    PhilZ Touch 5
    CWM Base version: v6.0.3.7
E: could not mount /data to setup /data/media path !

3 – I have the menu “Install Zip” but when I click on it and I choose “Choose zip from sdcard”, I get the following error message “E: Can’t mount /sdcard/”

So I am stuck there and cannot root my phone 🙁

    Anybody can help ?

    Thanks in advance !
