Samsung Press Event at CTIA: Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 (Updated: Video of Entire Press Event Added)

There was a lot of hype surrounding the Samsung event (and considering there were Samsung banners everywhere with the numbers 7, 8, 9, 10 on them everywhere I’d say it was pretty calculated). Everyone pretty much knew what was going to be announced (7, 8.9, 10 inch tablets seemed to fit those banners pretty well) but that didn’t make it any less interesting in my opinion. Samsung still had a some sleek devices to entice us with.

Samsung talked about how each of these new tablets would fit a different person’s lifestyle. The 7 inch is for the person more on the go (they use a travel writer as an example), the 8.9 inch is more for productivity (for this they used a real estate company CEO for their real world exampl), and the 10 inch tablet is more for entertainment and watching movies (they used an independent film maker). So let’s take a look at the two news tablets first.

The first device was the 10″ Samsung Galaxy Tab 10. Samsung’s new larger Galaxy Tab was a bit more than just a larger version, the specs were pretty nice:

  • 10.1″ PLS Display
  • Thin as a Samsung Galaxy S II device (really thin in other words).
  • 595 grams
  • Easy grip on the back
  • 6800mah battery (Samsung claims 10 hours of use no problem)
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • TouchWiz 3.0 (which we’ll get into later)
  • Adobe Flash 10.2
  • 1080P Playback

Not too bad and considering it is super light and super thin it is pretty slick looking. The 10.1 will be available in WiFi only version on June 8th. The pricing will be $499 for the 16Gb model and $599 for the 32gb model. Pricing sound familiar?

The 8.9 tablet had very similar specs. I’m not sure what made it more productive, other than the fact that it fit in a suit jacket pocket (demonstrated by the presenter at one point) but that device will be available “sometime in summer”. Pricing will be $469 for the Wifi only 16GB and $569 for the 32Gb.

Samsung also mentioned that the devices will launch as 4G versions at a later date (with HSPA+ 21mbps and LTE versions).

Update: Video of the entire event for those that wished they were there added!

So, what do you guys think of the specs?
