We begin today with some amazing news. A full 40 people showed up to buy a Verizon iPhone 4 at the Apple store in New York City yesterday morning.

If 40 people sounds like a lot to you maybe you should see what happened when the iPhone 4 originally launched. [Pause for video]

Now, to be fair the Verizon iPhone has been on sale for a few days now and Verizon themselves has declared their first day of online sales a huge success setting records, etc.

But the truth of the matter is, the hardcore Apple users that wanted an iPhone would have gotten one over the last few years and switched to AT&T for it. The only people left buying the Verizon one are mostly disgruntled AT&T users and the occassional Verizon user that decided he might as well get this i thingy cause his grandson loves it so much.

Speaking of the iPhone, move over retina display.This is the Hitachi 4.5″ IPS display. It has an 1100 to 1 contrast ratio, a 329dpi density, and a resolution of 1280×720 pixels (yes that’s 720P for those of you keeping score). This new display was announced earlier today. Hitachi went on to say that this display won’t begin mass production until around October of this year, so maybe the iPhone 6 will use it?

The next bit of news is an interesting study done by Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. He figures that Google made an estimated $133 Million from 22.5 million Android users in 2010. If you do the math that’s about $6 per Android user per year and he predicts that will become $10 per user per year in 2011. Not too shabby when you also add the undisclosed amount of money Google gets from manufacturers for their Google Apps package (the Market, GMail, etc.) and I’m sure Google’s quite happy with their little robot.

You might have already heard this one, since it’s the big news for the day today but Nokia and Microsoft have officially announced their partnership. In a nutshell this means Nokia is going to be moving away from MeeGo, Maemo, and Symbian, and pushing towards Windows Phone 7 on their handsets. And as much as a lot of people were hoping for an Nokia Google (Noogle) partnership, this kinda makes more sense. One company is struggling to keep their foothold in the smartphone market and the other is trying to ramp up their smartphone marketshare that is currently losing steam. Regardless, for us consumers, this means 3 giants are duking it out for our attention; Google, Apple, and Nokia/Microsoft which we’ll call NokiSoft, which sort of sounds like a laundry detergent. It’ll be interesting to see how this pushes all three to step up their game.

Last bit of news here is about Honeycomb, no you can’t have it on your phone yet. But if you happen to have a Nook Color or $250 to buy a Nook Color with, you can get a pretty stable version of it thanks to some developers over on XDA. Deeper-blue, one of the developers, managed to get a bootable version of the OS up and running on the Nook Color and samuelhalf fuh fuh managed to add a new kernel, the Market, and package it in a way that it’s a lot easier to install.
