Xiaomi, China’s Largest Phone Maker, Announces a Launch Event
Most of you won’t be familiar with Xiaomi, even though they are the third-largest phone maker in the world, but that doesn’t mean you should immediately discount their phones.
They are one of the few companies in the new made-in-China flagship phone craze along side Oppo, Meizu and Huawei. Essentially all of these manufacturers started making Android phones with similar specs to those of our big name brands like HTC, Samsung, Sony, etc. but at a much lower price point. And why not, most of those big companies are having their devices made China anyway, right?
Xiaomi hit their stride with the release of the Mi 3 and then again with its successor the Mi 4. Android phones with those top specifications and a very iPhone-like design (a Chinese company copied the iPhone? Weird…). Since it’s been more than a year since that launch, and Xiaomi just teased a new event they’re throwing on October 16th, everyone is betting that the Mi 5 is around the corner.
The rumored specs for this new device are an octa-core (or possibly a deca-core, that’s 10 cores, by the way) processor, 3 or 4 gbs of RAM, a 5.3″ 2.5k display, 16 or 64GB varieties, 16MP rear camera, a 3030mah battery, fingerprint scanner, USB-C port with quick charging, and a price tag of about $300 USD unlocked and contract free. Not too shabby, right?
Anyone interested in a high spec Chinese phone if the price is so damn low? I’m concerned about the custom software on it honestly (but, then again, I’m not a fan of the custom UI on Samsung phones) but nothing rooting the phone and flashing a custom ROM or even just using a third-party launcher won’t fix, amirite?
