How To: Load Honeycomb, Android 3.0, on the Nook Color (uSD Method)

I. Before You Begin

1. You must have done our How To Root the Nook Color (AutoNooter Method) procedure before beginning this one. If you haven’t, please go back and do it then come back to this procedure once you are done.

2. Right now, the method used for loading Honeycomb safely involves making an SD card bootable and then loading the Honeycomb image onto it. The Nook Color automatically boots from the SD card first so if there is an OS on the SD card (like Honeycomb) it’ll boot that instead of booting the normal OS that resides on the internal memory. This way you can boot Honeycomb and if you don’t want to use it, simply take out the SD card before turning on the Nook Color and you’ll boot into normal mode.

3. For this you will need a 4GB MicroSD card or larger and an external sd card reader (same as used in the How To Root procedure).

Thanks to Deeper-Blue for his work on getting the Honeycomb image to work on the Nook Color! If you appreciate this, please let him know and/or donate to him!

II. Burn the Honeycomb Image to the SD Card

1. Download the latest Honeycomb image and save it to your computer.

2. Extract the .zip file somewhere on your computer.

3. Take your MicroSD card and put it into an external sd card reader then plug that into your computer.

4. Open WinImage and select Disk > Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive and select the SD Card/SD Card Reader and then select the Honeycomb .img file that we unzipped earlier and wait for it to finish.

5. Turn off the Nook Color.

6. Once it is off, take out the MicroSD card and put it into the NOOKColor, don’t turn on the NOOKColor.

7. Plug the NOOKColor into the computer via the USB cable (this will cause it to boot up).

8. Wait and your NOOKColor will reboot when it is finished.

9. Done! Once it boots up, you’ll be greeted by the Honeycomb lock screen.

III. (Optional) Return the SD Card back to Normal (this will cause you to lose Honeycomb unless you redo this procedure again)

1. Turn off the Nook Color

2. Take out the MicroSD card.

3. Turn on the Nook Color.

4. Once you get to the normal home screen put the MicroSD card back into the Nook Color.

5. Now, go to Settings then Device Info then SD Card then click Unmount and then Format. Once it is done, it will remount the SD card and you will be good to go!

  1. Hi, I was able to successfully install AutoNooter 3.0–works beautifully! Thanks. I just put honeycomb on the sd card and when it loads it asks to a password to un-encrypts or something like that. Have you seen that? If you know what to do with that, please help. Thanks, Steve

      1. Chris, I should have followed up on this. I learned somewhere that Sandisk micro sdhc’s don’t have this problem, so I did the procedure on a Sandisk, and Honeycomb opened just fine, no request for password. Very strange, but someone w/more technical know how could probably explain!

I used a PNY brand sd card from Walmart and had no problem…. it runs fine… now just need to get some apps side-loaded.. I have trouble with that! LOL

    1. Nobody has answered the question, but I have the same silly request for a password. I found that turning off the Nook and ON again will load right the program minus the offending request. Hope it helps.

  3. I Just tried to install the software and it does not seem to work. The Nook stays with a small green text saying android.. The curse is flashing, but it does not move from there. I keep it like this for an hour with no further movement. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

    1. I had the same prob first time I tried…stuck on flashing android prompt forever. I just wiped the sd card and tried a second time. Worked like a charm!

      1. Thanks, I tried that a couple of times with no effect. Does it matter what size of memory card. I am tring to use a 16 GB card, should i just stick with 4, or possibly 8?

  4. rooted the honeycomb on my sd card. it boots up but I can not get the market app, or any of my apps. please help

  5. One big problem that you failed to mention. Getting the Android Market App downloaded. It seems mighty complicated to me.. Do you know how to root Market Apps on a Nook Color rooted Honeycomb?
    Thanks.

  7. I tried wiping my card a million times and putting it back on and retrying it, I have a 8gb micro sd card and ITS STILL STUCK AT THE “andriod” loading.. SOMEONE HELP! ILL PAY YOU WITH PAYPAL!

  8. Just successfully loaded mine. Kinda puzzled at the lock symbol until I remembered you tap and drag in the Nook so I did to the lock symbol and it opened! Configuring settings now.

  9. So after you do this, can you turn it on with the power button or do you have to always boot it plugged into your PC?
