How To: Root the Motorola CLIQ XT / Quench

I. Install the Motorola Drivers

1. Download the drivers for your computer and unzip them. Then double click the program inside to install the drivers.

Motorola Drivers

2. On your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.

II. Install the Android SDK

1. Follow our How To Setup ADB procedure just until you can see the device’s serial number at the end of step 6. Then come back to this procedure.

III. Root the Phone

1. Download the Rooting Files and extract them to the C: drive on your computer (like you did the AndroidSDK).

CLIQ XT / Quench Rooting Files

2. Plug in your phone via USB cable and select Charge Only on the phone.

3. On your computer, open a command prompt by clicking on the Start menu then typing in cmd and hitting enter in the search box.

4. In the command prompt, type the following, with hitting enter at the end of each line:

cd\
cd c:\androidsdk\tools\
adb push c:\Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push c:\su /sdcard/su
adb push c:\rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
adb push c:\install-root.sh /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
chmod 0755 install-root.sh

5. Once you have done that, leave the phone plugged in and go to the Market and download the Free version of ConnectBot and install it.

6. Open the ConnectBot, select local in the dropdown menu, then type local into the field and hit enter. Then type the following in, on the phone, with hitting enter at the end of each line (leave the phone plugged in to the computer while you do this).

cd /data/local/tmp
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

7. If it worked, you should see the following on the screen.

[+] Forked xxxx childs.     (xxxx will be an actual 4 digit number)

If you do not, then close the ConnectBot and reopen it and try again.

8. If it worked, close the terminal by either typing exit and hitting enter or by hitting menu and clicking close.

9. Once it is closed, reopen ConnectBot.

10. You should now see a # symbol, if so continue. If not then start over from step 4 or go here for a tip from another reader.

11. Now, with the # symbol in ConnectBot on your phone, type the following with hitting enter at the end of the line:

/data/local/tmp/install-root.sh

You should see nothing pop up after you hit enter, that means it worked, you now should have root access and be able to open your App Drawer on the phone and see Superuser Permissions inside.

12. To load a custom ROM and other fun stuff, head from here to our How To Load a Custom ROM procedure.

  1. When I get to step four everything is fine until I put in adb push c:\Superuser.apk/sdcard/Superuser.apk. I get a whole bunch of what I think are commands insted of what David gets in the command prompt. I have checked over to see if I have done everything right, but maybe I made a simple mistake I have not seen.
    Thank you in advance

    1. Nick,

Make sure that you have extracted the Quench Rooting files to the C: drive. Go to My Computer, then C: then you should see those files (Superuser.apk, su, the .bin file, etc) right there (not inside any folder, literally sitting on the C: drive).
Make sure you they are there then try again.

If you still get an error, tell me exactly what it said…

      1. Yes my files are directly in my C drive, I typed the commands in again and after I try to put the superuser.apk in my sdcard it gives me the same results.
It saids Android debug Bridge version 1.0.26 then a lot of commands.

I first guessed that since it did give me a bunch of commands I must of mis typed and it caused it but, I tried time and time again and same result, Best I could do is a screen shot of the command prompt.

        1. It sounds like to have the correct file address else it would kick back invalid address, based on what you typed in above however you are not leaving a space after the program name and before the directory address you are sending too; therefore it isn’t a valid command

It should look like this: c:\Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
NOT c:\Superuser.apk/sdcard/Superuser.apk. which is what you appear to be entering.

See how there is a space after the first Superuser.apk before the /

  2. Everything was fine, it was just human error on my part, If you are having problems look out for the little things such as spaces in the commands that’s what got me!

  3. Hey I get to step 6. under “Root the Phone” . After finding typing

    ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

    I get this:
[-] Cannot find adb: No such file or directory

Everything else seemed to go fine.

  4. Hey,

When I get to step 4 and attept to put the files on my sdcard, I enter in the commands exactly and even get the line in the command prompt that says xxxx KB/s (xxxx bytes in xxxxxx.00000s); however, I noted on David’s screen that there is an actual amount of bytes that was installed wherein my screen just says “(0 bytes in 161123.0000s)?????

Not sure what the problem is.

      1. I tried this and I get (0 bytes in 164788.000s) for all the files when I try to push them to the phone. I have the Superuser.apk on the C:. I guess the problem is finding the SD card. I have the phone on USB Debugging and on Charge Only setting when plugged into the computer. The command: adb devices shows my phone’s Serial number. Anything else I can do?

  5. Am I able to run2.1 on my quench after I root it. Also they have made it known that the quench in Canada will not get the2.1 upgrade butt the clix xt in the USA will get the 2.1 will the upgrade make a difference to installing2.1 on my quench. Thanks for your patience as I am not extremely versed in the smart phone capabilities.

  6. Attempting to root my quench and got an illegal system DLLL relocation error it says the DDL c:\ windows\system32\ shell32.DLL occupied an address range reserved for windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying tree DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.
I how you can help me make sense of this.
    Regards…kevster67.

  7. I hope you are still availsble.to help with the issues that are posted.sorry for being impatient.im sure you are really busy.
    Regards

  8. Hi there first timer here i just want to thank you. Your instructions got me through the whole thing flawlessly. Thanks so much for all your help now i think i might try to flash my phone tomorrow. do i have to backup my phone, is there an app for this. how do i go about it.
    thanks again,
    jeff

  9. when i give the command prompt with the super user and stuff i get (o bytes in 164788.00) i’ve turned off my computer and devices and it says the same thing can anyone tell me what am i doing wrong
    thanks

      1. First time poster but it would seem to be a good idea to download the rooting files if they worked as it is you download the rooting files it shows it is downloading then poof like magic no files. where are they and where can i get them? patiently waiting still not rooted (not fully at least superuser not working properly)

        1. If you are having issues downloading the files either right click the link for the files and say save target as. Or try using a different browser (Firefox, chrome, etc.).

  10. another thing when i give the comands in the device on connect bot , it tells me that ./rageagaisntthe cage the permission is denied

  11. So it worked like a charm, first shot, now I have root access; now how do I get the T-mobile crap I hate off my phone? Can I do this with out loading a custom ROM?

  12. i have tried this for the past 2 hours to get it to work, i think it goes fine till i get in to the connectbot stuff first line ok second line it says:

    ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: not found

then it goes back to the $ enter part, i really need to get root access please please try to help me what am i doing wrong?
i even tried the other guys work around and got no were with it, i have started from scratch and other places in between i am at a loss as what to do next. is there some program that will do the root stuff for you now?

just check to be sure and i do have the 4 files in the c: directory as they should be since i am guessing its all for not if they are not there.

(androidsdk) is what i have the file name as in the c: drive is this right? do i need to update this program? should it be running?

    1. Justin,

The 4 files need to be on the c drive NOT in the SDK folder. Then make sure you do the commands before that and get no errors (they are moving the files to the phone so you can run them from console).

  13. the c drive is were i have them and as far as i know there were no errors just lots of files flying by, i did try also closing the connectbot program by just closing it and also app killing it. i will try from Root the Phone step 2 to see if updating the sdk program has made a difference.

  14. When i reach step 11, and hit enter after typing in the /data/..etc it says permission denied though it does show the # symbol before hand. Help?

  15. i got superuser installed just fine, however whenever i try to use barnacle or wireless tether i get an error in regards to not having the correct kernel. this is the only reason i rooted my phone so im kinda bummed. anyone know a workaround or whats wrong?

  16. when I get to the second line that I need to type in connectbot it says ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: permission deined. What am I doing wrong here what step did I screw up?

  17. Great so I just restarted my phone and did all the steps again and now my pc picks up my phone but the adb thing won’t, this is just getting stupid just my luck that it won’t work for me.

  18. well I got everything worked out up until the very last step the install-root.sh wont work on my pc or on my phone, everything else went though just fine and the install-root.sh in sitting in c: any help would be great thanks.

  19. Installed ROM, tried for two weeks, didn’t like it. What’s the easiest way to revert back to the original rom?

    Thanks

p.s. rooting the phone was definately worth it, but the ROM I tried caused my Cliq to slow down and lots forced closes.

  20. I just got a motorola update.1.32.20.mb501. I can root the phone, but when I reboot the phone it goes back to unrooted mode. I did move the recovery.img. Is there a step I missed? By unrooted I mean su no longer works it says permission denied even though I chmod 6755 that file.

  21. everything for me goes well till i get to connectBot.
    ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: permission denied

what am i doing wrong?? 🙁

    1. i would make sure that it exists in the directory. (you can go into “my computer” and browse to that directory and make sure that program is in there). If it is, I would make sure you are typing everything correctly.

  22. i cant extract rooting files. i been trying this for the last 4 hrs. every time i try to extract the file to c drive. its says cannot create install root. cannot create rageagainstthecage
    cannot create su
    cannot create superuser.apk
    can someone help please

  23. some of the text that dave types in the vid is slightly different from what is written below starting at about 2:40 when he is using cmd. since u cant see all of the screen when i go back to what is written in the text it dosnt work. is this somthing i am doing or another error?

  24. I used a different recovery image (the one for the cliq) and my recovery menu is different. I was still able to load the rom but can’t install ap2sd or wipe battery stats. How do I switch recovery imgs?

  25. Once i do step 11 and hit enter on the phone it say /sdcard/Superuser.apk: No such file or directory………. What should i do?

  26. Hello. I get all the way to step 11 when i type it in i get permission denied. don’t know what to do tried rebooting the phone also uninstalled and re installed connectbot but getting the same results every time. any help is appreciated.

  27. i have installed and downloaded everything but when i get to put the files on my card they say that they pushed o bytes and i have redownloaded the root files but still the same thing

  28. hey dave i really need some help this is driving me nuts. when i type /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh on my phone the next line says permission denied. I cant find help on this anywhere. Please help soon

  29. I have downloaded Android Sdk and went thru the steps and have seen my serial number, but the next time I pulled the the cmd prompt it wont push (adb push c:Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk) Just some adb ppp (tty) [parameters] -run ppp over usb jargon. Who can help?

  30. I have successfully rooted my phone after two attempts with these instructions. Thanks! But, how now do we install android 2.2 onto our motorola cliq xt? Thanks

  31. Yes you can but it might be difficult to get the drivers installed. But if you can then just replace command prompt with terminal and you should be able to do it from there.

  32. Sadly the CLIQ XT wasn’t the biggest seller so there arent as many developers with them and therefore not that many ROMs.
You’d have to search for a 2.2 ROM for the CLIQ XT and then flash it using the How To Load a Custom ROM procedure linked at the bottom of this one.

If you find a good ROM, submit it to us and we’ll link it here so others can find it (go to Contact Us at the top of the site then Submit a ROM).

    1. Thank you so much. Thank you for your website and thank you for sharing your knowledge and thank your for this site. I found this website/forum where it seems like there are a lot of devlopers who have made ROMs for android 2.1 for cliq xt. Here is a link to it: http://modmymobile.com/forums/558-motorola-cliq-xt-development/555829-cliq-xt-now-running-android-2-1-no-data-keyboard-layout-problems.html

I will follow the procedure you outlined above after I found the ROM that I want to use and have successfully installed it onto my cliq xt. Thanks!

  33. I’m on the last step, where I enter /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh on ConnectBot, but it keeps telling me file not found! I go back and retrace my steps, but no luck. Help?

  34. In step 4, after I type “adb shell” I get the “$” symbol in the command line rather then AndroidSDKtools as a result. I then type in after the $, “cd/data/local/tmp” to which I receive the reply, “cd/data/local/tmp: not found”

Now if I put the space inbetween the “cd” and the “/data/local/tmp” then I receive no info, only the “$” symbol and the blinking cursor. I then enter “chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin” and am told “Unable to mod chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: no such file or directory”

I tried turning my phone off and back on and trying it again but received the same result.

I am completely new to this yet some what computer literate so please bear with me and provide me detailed step by step directions. Thank you for your time.

  35. Ok first off, when you do the cd commands correctly it’ll just jump to the next line that’s normal. Now to the other commands, any time it says no such file or directory, there is only 2 possible reasons. One is that the file isn’t there (you never moved it etc), the other is your spelling the file name wrong.
Just start over and be very careful with each line and spacing. Good luck!

i am having the same issue as gopicket. searched my emtire c: drive and file not found. where would i locate this file?

  36. I’ve gotten to step four and in the command prompt I can see that my device is connected but when I try to push the superuser file all it does is give me a directory of commands I can use and the explanations of each command. I’m not sure exactly what I am doing wrong here. please help

  37. I was trying to root my Motorola Quench XT502. Everything went smoothly till step 5. In step 6, after opening Connectbot in my mobile and entering local terminal I’m not able to enter text as there is no keyboard popping up. But when I touch on the screen (Ctrl) & (Esc) tabs become visible on the lower left corner and (keyboard) symbol becomes visible on the lower right corner. on touching on the icon of keyboard it disappears. I even tried long pressing teh menu button but no luck. I uninstalled the Connectbot and reinstalled it but I’m not getting the virtual(soft)keyboard. I even installed Full keyboard app and tried but not succeeded. I’ll be greatful to anyone who can help me with this issue. Thanks

  62. It finally just hit me, I forgot to press enter after the last line in step 4. No more permission being denied here.

  63. It took a long time as I had to retry various commands several times (was doing it on a mac), but it in the end it worked 🙂
    Thank you for the guide!

    1. im doing mine on a mac also, can you explain to me how you started off, because icant unzip files, icant even open them. im stuck.

        1. If you run anything *nix (unix, linux, bsd, mac, etc), you don’t need the drivers and you can safely skip step one.

You will also need to run the adb utility as root, or your device S/N won’t show up properly. If you accidentaly ran it as normal user, do the following:

          $ ./adb kill-server
          $ su root
          # ./adb start-server
          # ./adb devices

NOTE: You really only need to run the ./adb start-server command as root. Once the adb daemon is started, it runs with root permissions in the background and the rest of the commands can be passed by normal user.

Hope this helps, it sure would have helped me. That’s why Google is on my side 😀

  64. whenever i type in the stuff on commandbot i always get the forked childs number but when i enter exit it says disconnected and freezes

  65. whenever i type in the stuff on commandbot i always get the forked childs number but when i enter exit it says disconnected and freezes

  66. I have done everything all the way to step 11 but i still don’t see the Superuser app in my app drawer.. and whenever i turn my phone off and back on i get the $ sign again instead of the # sign.. Is this supposed to happen or am i doing something wrong???

  67. SilverSuperman22

Okay Mr. Unlocker!!!! Its time to help us?….i did evrything but like some ppl here once i get to step 11 i get an “Access Denied” Im gettin damn tired of repeating the process and getting the same thing everytime. Last time u helped anyone in this thread was a month ago, i tried looking elsewhere but all of give the same instructions but NO HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  68. i was having the same problem with the chmod rage…bin. i fixed it. the problem is that in the instructions it doesnt tell you to unzip ALL of the files you downloaded into the c: dir. if you just unziped them they most likely went to the same place you downloaded the zip file to.

  69. so in the video you finished after the rageagainstthecage part, but the written directions says to type in some other things. which is correct?

  70. I have followed the steps exactly up to step 4 trying to push the superuser.apk. Here is the error I got “cannot stat ‘c:Superuser.apk’ : No such file or directory.” Not sure why it is doing this since I followed each step to the letter.

    1. Disregard, I found it. No where does it say to extract the Moto_MSM_Root file to the androidsdk folder we created. I will do that now and try it again.

      1. Never mind that didn’t work either. Anyone give me a hand? I still get the same error even after putting the in the directory.

  71. Awesome job guys. The first time I did this a month ago it took forever but this time (I bricked and had to reflash) I followed your directions, and more importantly the spacing exactly and in ten minutes was rooted.

Thank you so much for helping newbies like myself out so much.

  72. Awesome job guys. The first time I did this a month ago it took forever but this time (I bricked and had to reflash) I followed your directions, and more importantly the spacing exactly and in ten minutes was rooted.

Thank you so much for helping newbies like myself out so much.

  73. I had the same problem. You’re not leaving a space between the last letter of the file name on c: and the forward slash before sdcard (c:su /sdcard….) So when you make the command you’ve been seeing a long bunch of android commands I’m guessing? When you do each of those pushes right, it will follow each command with a number of KB transferred. 396, 42, 98…

    Try again!

  74. i dont know wat to do i did all steps up to 11 …and wen i check my the app drawer i dont see the super user icon…i opened my file maneger tried to install it manually but keep getting “problem parsing the package”…HELP

  75. am stuck at the first line input of the command –>> adb push C: blah blah blah <—- part………. it keeps printing some sort of dir help thing…… plz tell me what am doing wrong and yes i did extract the msm root to c:..

  76. I’ve read a bunch of the comments and I’m getting the same problem. Maybe you could tell me or us where we should put those spaces in. I’ve made it down to the second to last step and I’m getting the “rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: No such file or directory” error. When I types in the “c:su /sdcard/su” I used spaces the first time and the second I did not. Is it supposed to be spaced? Also with the “c:Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk” They look like spaces but I realized they not so I did not put them in the 3rd time around and I still have nothing. You say it may not be where it’s supposed to be but where is it supposed to be? In the C: root directory?

  77. if you did the 1.34.24 update this will not work matter or fact if you rooted and did this update you will loose root access unless there is a work around for this your still f&%$ed

    1. moto-really-sucks

any word on 1.34.24 work-arounds? I have tried rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin about 10 times with no luck getting root.

  78. if you did the 1.34.24 update this will not work matter or fact if you rooted and did this update you will loose root access unless there is a work around for this your still f&%$ed

  79. c:AndroidSDKtools>adb push c:Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
cannot stat ‘c:Superuser.apk’: No such file or directory

I get this error with every line after this one up to the adb shell, when i get the $ at the beginning of every line.
    after that i get this:

    $ chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
    chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Unable to chmod rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: No such file or directory.

    i dont understand why

    1. el detalle es que despues de “cd” no lleva la diagonal!!!!

      es:   “cd data/local/tmp”

      (asi sin la “/”)

  80. Hi, this worked for me too. I followed the instructions exactly and watched the video to be sure. Thanks for the tutorial!

  81. I sucessfully completed the rooting procedure for my Cliq XT and now have the Superuser application. What I don’t know how to do is to use it. When I open the Superuser app, there are no apps listed in the Apps tab. How do I add apps to the list? I want to add my Free Advanced File Manager app to this list, so that I can move a file to the phone’s root directory, which will enable me to upgrade to 2.1

  86. Hey there – I get to this step: “11. Now, with the # symbol in ConnectBot on your phone, type the following with hitting enter at the end of the line:
    /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh”

And it says, “/sdcard/Superuser.apk: No such file or directory
What am I doing wrong? @_@

  87. I was able to root my cliq XT on a macintosh. It was not difficult for me, but I’m fairly comfortable with developer tools and unix-style command line.

I installed the mac version of the android SDK, then mucked about a bit to get it to download and install ADB, then followed the rest of the instructions (making appropriate changes for mac file paths, etc.)

I think it may be possible to do the whole rooting procedure using ConnectBot, without having to install anything on the mac. If I have time, I’ll look into this and write step-by-step instructions.

  88. How’s it going, i’m new to all this. I have Cliq Xt, trying to root. was able to get the adb procedure done but when I download the rooting files, computer wont let me extract files as only C:, it gives me error window, I’ve tried saving as C:moto which works, however when I’m @ command panels. I’m stuck @ the 3rd step [adb push c:superuser.apk /sdcard/superuser.apk, even tried adding c:motosuperuser….. Like i said I’m completely new to this, and I’m stuck with the cliq xt with 1.5, cant get a new phone for a while, would really appreciate getting gingerbread 2.1.
    Thanks

  94. Dumb question, but will i lose my texts or contacts if i root my phone and use a custom ROM. I suspect they would, so is there a way to back it up?

  95. is this method completely safe?
waht would happen if say one of the steps was performed properly. could i just reset my phone and start over?

  97. I’ve been doing this for almost 2 hours, clicking every link on here, downloaded this or that, and nothing.the rageagainstthecage isn’t installing in a local tmp file on my sd card…i’ve also clicked on other link to see what someone else did, and didn’t work for me…just not working. and the adk tools file is located in the platform-tools dir now..so maybe update your commands that we need to use to install that tmp and get our phone rooted.

!   C:UserselyeDownloadsmotoroot.zip: Cannot create install-root.sh!   Access is denied.!   C:UserselyeDownloadsmotoroot.zip: Cannot create rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin!   Access is denied.!   C:UserselyeDownloadsmotoroot.zip: Cannot create su!   Access is denied.!   C:UserselyeDownloadsmotoroot.zip: Cannot create Superuser.apk!   Access is denied.help please!!!

  104. Ok, so I did everything correctly, I think.  I didn’t get any errors and the files were transferred properly(It showed how much data transferred and not the list of Android commands). The problem is when I get to the ConnectBot.  It connects fine but them when I enter “./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin” and hit enter it tells me “./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: not found”, but if I enter “rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin” and hit enter it tells me “./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin: permission denied” which sorta tells me it’s there but there must be another problem.

    Please help.

    1. What’s also odd is that if I run the same command on my PC in the command prompt it works, but still doesn’t change the “$” to a “#”…

  105. when i type “adb push c:rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin” i get the error message “cannot open ‘c:rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin’ No such file of directory’
    Could someone please help me….
