  5. […] Ultra simple Android rooting is all the rage right now and with several options popping up for many devices, it’s no surprize that T-Mobile’s and AT&T’s flavors of Samsung Galaxy S – Vibrant and Captivate, respectively – are receiving the same treatment. Over at xda=developers, you’ll find the root/unroot app for Captivate here, and for Vibrant here. The apps are for Windows users. As always, pursue at your own risk. Via The Unlockr […]

  6. TGA_Gunnman says:

    Hello Unlockr,

If you want you can add the I9000 to the list. It will do 2.1 root and unroot but 2.2 JP2 root only. 2.2 is not a supported firmware and to root JP3 is out of the scope of my simple app. Rooting to 2.2 JP3 is a larger process using Oden and Unrooting from JP1,2 or 3 would involve using Oden and going back to stock firmware.

    Any thoughts?

  10. Nate says:

Is it possible to do this using a Mac? Please say yes….

    • TheUnlockr says:

      Nate,

Unfortunately the program is for Windows only I believe. No boot camp on your mac? Or a friend with a Windows PC you could use real quick (only takes 10 minutes then you dont need a computer again).

  11. Skilz says:

From my understanding, this root method does not unlock the bootloader, which means you do not void the warranty. My question is, what are the pros and cons of unlocking the bootloader, besides the fact that you void the warranty (i dont really care about my warranty).

  12. TGA_Gunnman says:

For those of you having issues with the update.zip not being found this is because adb could not find your device to xfer the file over to it. Make sure your drivers in windows are setup correctly. Open up a CMD window in my directory. Open my directory and hold down SHIFT and right click mouse and choose open command window here.
Then type “adb devices” if your device does not come back then your drovers are not setup correctly.

There is another method on XDA that just was written. Its an app for your phone that will root you but it is still being tested and does not unroot.

This page is very informative now i understand that its very much easy to root the mobile. But one thing to ask u guys. Is it necessary to LOAD CUSTOM ROM ? As per i know custom rom is the Operating System which is already installed in our gadget. ? Without it can’t we use wifi/bluetooth tethering? Tethering and Remove preloaded application is my main criteria.

I have T-mobile Vibrant with 3 key locked, and I followed all the instruction to root it and install a new rom. I used the “enter recovery mode” function provided by “ROM Manager”.

My problem is, in the step of “choose a zip file from SD card” in recovery mode, it displays internal storage’s directory instead of SD card’s.

I found that the update.zip is located in the root of internal storage’s directory and is missing in SD card. I tried to fix it by copying update.zip to SD card and it didn’t work. Then I tried to copy the ROM file to the root of internal storage, I can find the ROM in “choose a zip file” this time. However, when I installed the ROM, it freezed at “installing” with 0% of the process bar. I waited for about 10 minutes and removed the battery. The phone booted into the T-mobile’s ROM.

What should I do to correct the SD card directory?

I was able to root my Captivate with no problem. The instructions are quite clear. I got the little Superuser Permission app icon. However, I don’t know what to do now. I wanted to uninstall apps that I don’t want, like AT&T Navigate, but I don’t have the uninstall option for that app in Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications. How do I get rid of it for good?

Also, is it safe to keep the phone rooted all the time? Would it be better to unroot it when I don’t need root access? (I’m a Linux user (although I ran the rooting in Windows) and I never run apps as root because safety is a big concern.)

Thanks for helping this Android newbie.

    • TheUnlockr says:

      1. Its a bit of a command line adventure to remove apps you don’t want one at a time. The best way to go is flash a custom recovery image then use it to flash a custom rom (the custom roms have speed tweaks and crappy att apps removed etc.)

      2. Unlike with root access on a regular linux system, we root and install a separate app called Superuser Permissions. What that program does is notify you if anything asks for root access then you have to give it permissions to allow the app to use root otherwise it blocks it. So no worries about leaving it rooted.

    • Kenforillo says:

hey, i tryed all that but it wont work, can you get back to me at kenforillo@yahoo.com

In order to remove apps once the device is rooted, you have to go to the android market and search for “root uninstaller”. That will bring up a number of apps made specifically for that purpose.

I have a vibrant that i rooted a couple of months ago. A week or so after rooting i noticed that my usb connection was a bit off. If i unplugged the charger, the battery icon would look like i was still charging the phone. It would also look as if i was charging from my laptop if i was charging from a wall. Not sure if I should un-root the phone. Any suggestions

Thank You! Directions were easy to follow and videos helped worked great on my vibrant!! At least I think, I have the superuser icon but nothing comes up when I click on it, iis that how it is supposed to be? Also, whole reason I did this cause I could not get the 2.2 update to work thro kies and really want to be able to use my vibrant as a wifi hot spot. Can you point me to a good ROM for this? None I saw listed a wifi hotspot only wifi calling which I will use too!

  136. I now have the solution to all your problems… I have done it and it worked perfect on my Vibrant
Now that I see this being written, let me say it too: Follow instructions at your own risk…
Before I start let me explain some stuff I got to realize. They might be true but it helped in rooting and installing a new ROM
    • First of all, I guess you get signature failure because ClockWorkMod did not install on your phone. So you are basically still running on the stock Samsung CWR
    • Second, CRW doesn’t install even though it tells you on ROM manager. This is because your actual ROM is full (so no disk space)
    • If you are running Froyo and my instructions fail, please use ODIN to flash to 2.1 éclair. This is due to signature strictness in Froyo. I had to do it myself

Now this is what I did:
    1. Use SuperOneClick or OneClickRoot. But if it doesn’t work, you can as well Root your phone using OCLF.2.0 (The recent versions don’t have root due to Google policy). I used OCLF.2.0.4

    2. After rooting your phone, delete some data from the system file to free up space. You can use any tool that you are comfortable with. I used RootExplorer. I prefer deleting sounds coz they won’t tamper much with the system and you can easily recopy them. To do so, go to:
    a. /system/media/audio/alarms
    b. /system/media/audio/notification
    c. /system/media/audio/ringtones

    3. You can order by size to just delete the heaviest. You don’t have to delete all. Just a few from each folder above

    4. Download and install Rom Manager and install CloakWorkMod. It should now be fine if you reboot your phone. If there is no change, do the following:
    a. Repeat step 2 and delete some more sound then try step 3 again
    b. If it still didn’t work, check the root of your folder. You will see a folder called CloakWorkMod
    i. Keep opening the folders until you reach …./cm/recoveries/
ii. You will see a zip folder called recovery-clockwork-2.5.1…….
iii. Copy it to the root of your phone card
    iv. Rename it to update
    v. Reboot your system into recovery mod
vi. Select install update.zip or install zip from sd card (Can’t remember what it is called on stock CloackWorkMod recovery) 🙂
vii. The CloackWorkMod recovery will change after install
    viii. You have finished
ix. Select the option to Reboot your phone
    5. Download and install a ROM of your choice
    a. Download the ROM
    b. Place it on your phone
    c. Go to Rom Manager
    d. Select Install Rom from SD card
    e. Locate the Rom and select it
    f. You are done (NB follow instruction on how to install the particular Rom you downloaded. Process after selecting the Rom might change)
    6. I am ready to assist further in case of any problem

    • Lazkid2 says:

HI, I HAVE THE CAPTIVATE WITH THE 2.2 FROYO AND WHEN IS IN RECOVERY MODE AND I TRY TO REINSTALL THE PACKAGES IT SAYS E:SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED / INSTALLATION ABORTED. WHAT CAN I DO TO COULD ROOT MY PHONE!!

  140. Ma Brock12 says:

ok. this took me forever to figure out but it’s rather simple. after you update to froyo 2.2 the phone will not support roms with the new kernal. you have to flash back to ji6kernel-recovery2e, find it on google.,, can’t remember the actual site. You must use Odin3 and place the kernal in the PDA slot. Push stART.After you do that, flash rommanager so you have the update.zip file. place your rom on your internal sd card.. (if you get the write protection error.. its because you are using mass storage. use the media option). restart in recovery. load your rom from sd. and presto.. no more issues. =)

  141. Lwdjdmr says:

    thaaaaaaaaank you!

  142. Mark Johnston says:

    Installation aborted.

    Please advise……..
