How To Run Android Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nokia N9 (Updated 09.08.13)

UPDATED for PR1.3: Read the procedure below for changes in section IV.

Have a Nokia N9 but wish you could just get some Android goodness on it? How about loading Ice Cream Sandwich on it and in a separate partition so you don’t mess up your current setup? Thanks to some hard-working developers over at Nitdroid.com, no problem at all. Here’s how.

I. Before You Begin

1. This shouldn’t effect your current MeeGo setup, but as a precaution please do a backup.

2. This can be a dangerous procedure so please be careful, especially when typing in commands etc.

3. These instructions are for a Windows computer.

II. Flash the Dual-Boot Kernel

1. On your device go to Settings > Security > Device Lock > Autolock and turn it OFF.

2. Download the Flasher program from here to flash the N9 with (WinFlasher-3.12.1.exe)

3. Install it to your computer and install it to the folder C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher\ when prompted.

4. Turn off the Nokia N9 and make sure it is NOT plugged in to the computer.

5. Download NaviFirm from here, unzip it, and install it on your computer.

6. Open NaviFirm and then select the Nokia N9 from the far left list, then select 30.2012.7.1 from the second list, then look for your version of the Nokia N9 in the last list (you can better decide by looking under the SIM tray for the 7 character identifier, type in that identifier in the last list to easily find your version) and select it.

7. After it is selected click Unmark all at the top, then look through that list and only check the one that starts with DFL61 AND has the word LEGACY in it.

8. Then click on “Browse” next to “Save to” on the right and choose the folder C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher\ and also uncheck the “Use productcode as final path”

9. Then click Download.

10. Next, download the Kernel file from here (select the zImage file with the latest date to the right of it) and save it inside the folder C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher\

11. Open the command prompt on your computer by opening the start menu and typing cmd in the search box and hitting enter.

12. In the command prompt type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:

cd C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher
flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –flash-only=kernel -f -R

*in the above command please note that 005 not 001 after LEGACY, and please not the two hyphens before flash (–).

13. After hitting enter at the last line, plug the USB cable into the phone first then plug the other end into the computer and wait a few seconds for it to start flashing the phone.

III. Install Sillyboot

1. Unplug your phone from the computer and turn it on if it isn’t on already.

2. On your device, go to Settings > Security > Developer Mode and turn it ON. This will restart the device and download some apps, say yes to all the prompts.

3. Plug the phone back in to the computer via USB and select USB Storage mode so we can transfer files to it.

4. Download the Sillyboot file from here and save it to your computer.

5. Copy the Sillyboot file to the Nokia N9 in the MyDocs folder.

6. Unplug the device.

7. Open Terminal on the Nokia N9 and type the following into it with hitting enter at the end of each line (when asked for a password put in rootme):

devel-su
tar xjvf /home/user/MyDocs/sillyboot.tar.bz2 -C /

IV. Install Android Ice Cream Sandwich

1. Head to our how to Run Android Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nokia N9 (PR 1.3) procedure instead of doing the 10 steps below.

1. Download the ICS ROM from here and save it to your computer.

2. Plug in the Nokia N9 via USB and select USB Storage mode so we can transfer files to it.

3. Copy the file to your Nokia N9 in the MyDocs folder.

4. Unplug the device.

5. Open Terminal on the Nokia N9 and type the following into it with hitting enter at the end of each line (when asked for a password put in rootme):

devel-su
tar xjvf /home/user/MyDocs/nninedroid_ics_alpha1.tar.bz2 -C /home/

6. After that, turn off the Nokia N9 and then turn it back on.

7. When prompted, hit the Volume Up button to boot into the “alternative OS”

8. Wait a while for it to boot for the first time.

9. Soon as your device boots in to Android, go to Settings > Display > Sleep and change the option to 30 minutes (there is a known issue that sometimes when it goes to sleep it will turn off the phone).

10. To boot back to regular MeeGo, simply turn off the phone and turn it back on.

  1. MD says:

Thank you so much David. Though I think I will pass on this mod BUT I am all over it when it gets ironed out. I hope you do a step by step when this enters at least BETA. I’m hoping it will be in the next couple of weeks. This just isn’t good enough to be my daily at this point but looks really promising.

  2. MD says:

Forgot to ask but does these work?

    1. 3G/HSPA+
    2. Calls
    3. Text messages

If those all work I may actually give this a shot.

    • David Cogen says:

      Hey MD,

I tried it on an N9 and too be honest the only things I noticed NOT working are the camera, battery indicator (always says your out of juice and doesn’t indicate when charging), and sleep mode (when it happens on its own as opposed to you just turning off the screen) locks the phone up.
Text messages, calls, and data works no problem. It’s worth a shot since its a dual boot, I’d say. You can just turn it off and back on and your in MeeGo. And when the developer updates his ICS ROM, it’ll most likely just be repeating the last steps to update to the newer version as they are released.

      • MAHLON GARRIDIGAN says:

        Hi there,

For some reason i cannot receive a call. the phone rings and i slide the ringing icon to the green answer, but the call does not connect. It still rings on the other end, but on my side it stops ringing but nothing on the line.

    • maxbc says:

Same issue here. Operator-dependent SIM cards not recognized? No service, no PIN asked for, no configurable APN (see other posts below about apn’s). No wifi too (service unavailabe or such, when trying to turn on).

  3. Ercan says:

I cant get the boot screen to press the volume u8p button. If you can help me pls send me an email nevruzercangul@hotmail.com. At least can u pls tell me how can i undo everything i have done

    • David Cogen says:

      Hello Ercan,

What probably happened (as it happened to me) is your either didn’t flash the Kernel properly in the beginning, or didn’t flash sillyboot properly. To be honest I’d go back and try again and make sure you get the confirmation like I did in the video. As for undoing everything, if you didn’t do those other steps properly anything else you did after erases after reboot 🙂

  4. Saras says:

Hi. I was trying to follow your tutorial but I’ve come to a problem here… I try tu run the cmd then I write cd C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher hit enter than
flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –flash-only=kernel -f -R (the .bin file name is according to my N9 location) and hit enter…
But it says ERROR: Only single flash option is allowed ERROR: Error processing option -f

    • David Cogen says:

      Saras,

Firstly, make sure you are typing in what is written in the procedure not what is typed in the video (the file name changed). The command is this:
      flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –flash-only=kernel -f -R

Notice the 005 not 001 that you had. And also the command has two -‘s so it’s — in front of flash.

      Let me know.

      • Saras says:

Damn… You could include delete/edit function here 😀 Sorry for triple post 🙂

        • David Cogen says:

There isn’t one? I deleted it for you anyway.

          • Saras says:

Another issue… I was flashing my phone when it showed security problem. I’ve turned off autolock. I believe that was caused by app called track & protect. Now it shows that I don’t have a security number and should enter a new one (security>settings>device lock) but each time I try it just shows wrong security code… I’ll try to reinsta thel meego os :/

          • David Cogen says:

When did it show a security issue? When you booted it up? Or?

          • Saras says:

During the dual-boot kernel flashing. But that didn’t happen with a clean meego 🙂

          • alihaider says:

hey david i wanna know that when i write commands in the command prompt it doesnt show sucess but instead it open another commandprompt and after a second it disappers

      • Nikhail Haran says:

hey David i did tried this as well but its not working? can u do another video or explain it in detail step by step on how to do it cause yeah its not working for me either

      • gokhan says:

        I have a problem.

Notice the 005 not 001 that you had. And also the command has two -’s so it’s — in front of flash.

  5. Saras says:

Also, I wanted to know if it will be possible to turn between Android and Meego os? And how?

    • David Cogen says:

I mention this at the very bottom of the procedure, but all you have to do is turn off the phone when in Android and then when you turn it back on DONT hit volume up when prompted and you’ll boot into regular MeeGo. That simple 🙂

  6. Dave says:

I keep getting ERROR: unknown arguments specified!

  7. Saras says:

I knew about the 001 not beibng 005 from the file name I had 🙂
Thank you for that double — before flash 🙂 It helped.
    Cheers.

  8. nikhil says:

    hi
everything went well for me but 3G dosent work and i cant connect to internet now. what i should i do to make 3G work ?

  9. Raqif says:

    Hi,about the sillyboot thing,
    ive got the
    sbin/preinit
    bin/evkey
but when i reboot, the “vol up” button doesnt show up,why?

    • David Cogen says:

Did you put the -C / at the end of the command?

      • srinath says:

        Hi Daivd,
I am getting the same error. I remember adding -C /. and checked the files also.
I think boot loader is booting up but it is not waiting for the input.

One more thing this is the firmware i downloaded
        DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM.bin

if I try with 005 it is not working. I tried with 001 only. I flashed the image.
Now I am getting the warning screen but not able to give any input. even it is not loading meego also.
What can I do from here. Is it possible to put only android in N9 if so can you give me a link for the procedure
        Thanks in advance

  10. nikhil says:

i cant connect to play store ? help please

  11. Saras says:

Works! After reinstalling meego with Phoenix. The boot up is kinda slow… Thank you very much for this! 🙂

  12. Saras says:

I’ve installed the android successfully. But I can’t connect to the internet and usb doesn’t allow me to enter my phone through pc. Do you know how I could do that? Because I could download some android games on pc ant put them in my N9 through usb. As the internet doesn’t work…

    • David Cogen says:

You need to put in your APN again in the phone to get the internet to work properly. Google for your cell phone service provider’s APN then put that information in the APN section of your settings on your phone.

      • maxbc says:

I’ve done that, but SIM is not recognized at all. No GSM, no calls, no texts. Entered APN disappears instantly and WiFi indicates “unable to connect to this service, please try again later” when attempting to turn it on.

  13. Gerardo Al says:

    Hello,
Thank you for your tutorial, I keep getting this message over and over again, I’ve turned autolock off, put a check on “non provisionable device” on mfe, and turn track and protect off as well. What could be the problem?

error: SU_BEGIN_IMAGE_UPDATE_REQ terminated with error code 10: security failure
devicelock on: cannot flash unsigned image

    Thanks!

    • Nikhail Haran says:

im having the same problem as you as well. ive done all of that as well but it still ends with an error

      • maxbc says:

devicelock, doesn’t that mean either 1) your phone is locked (which shouldn’t be as indicated by a note in flasher console output) 2) you set up a security lock (there is none by default) on the phone, in that case you have to find a way of disabling it

  14. Thomas Gell says:

    Hello
When i type the command to flash the kernel nothing happen.
I press enter and it skips to the next line.
It doesn’t even try to flash my n9 and there is no message to inform me.
Can someone help me with this problem?

    • Thomas Gell says:

Also when i type the number on the back of my sim into navifirm there are no results and i ended up downloading the Australian 16gb black version. Will this work if the numbers are different?
      Thanks in advance.

      • David Cogen says:

Hmm, you definitely should have a firmware in there. Please make sure that you have the right number in there. Do you know if your phone is a 16Gb Black Australian Version?

        • Thomas Gell says:

I’m 99.9% sure it is an Australian version and i’m 100% sure it is 16gb black. Even if it was from another country the number should come up in the list. The number is 059L698.
Thank you for replying so fast.

          • Laeticia says:

            Hi Thomas!
I have the same problem as you. There are no results when I type the number of my SIM. How did you finally do? Did you choose another number? Did it work?

          • Thomas Gell says:

i have yet to boot ICS on my phone.
The variant i tried was the Australian black 16gb which did not work.
It is peculiar that both of us have the same problem.
May i ask what country and retailer you bought your N9 from?

    • David Cogen says:

Close the command prompt, then reopen it by right clicking it and selecting open as administrator and then try again.

      • Thomas Gell says:

I tried this and re-entered the command but i get this

WARNING: bad kernel format in zImage
FIASCO ERROR: zImage: No such file or directory

I’m not sure where to go from here.
        Please help!!

  15. Ric T. says:

I think I’m getting the same error as Saras.
I can’t flash the kernel, it says “Devicelock ON: cannot flash unsigned image”.
I have double-checked, and the Autolock is already turned OFF.

Are there other settings I should configure?
Will it matter if my Harmattan version is PR1.2?

    Thanks for this tutorial btw.

  16. MAHLON GARRIDIGAN says:

    Hi there,
    I’m also getting the:
error: SU_BEGIN_IMAGE_UPDATE_REQ terminated with error code 10: security failure
devicelock on: cannot flash unsigned image
    ERROR: Failed to flash images

and my devicelock is definitely off and track and protect is off.
after the phone reboots I have the warranty void logo (would be nice to get rid of that scary screen)

and then i have the same issue as Saras when i try to go in and turn on device lock. wrong security code

  21. Saras says:

To all who have issues with the device lock or security while flashing… Store all your data from N9 to your computer, reinstall a fresh Meego os and then to the flashing with the device lock off and don’t create tarck & protect account. I think T&P app was the issue for me,,,

  29. Mahlon says:

Here’s how I got it to work.
    Workaround:
    If you’re also getting the:
error: SU_BEGIN_IMAGE_UPDATE_REQ terminated with error code 10: security failure
devicelock on: cannot flash unsigned image
    ERROR: Failed to flash images

    THEN:
    Reflash your phone using

    12. In the command prompt type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:

    cd C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher
    flasher -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -f

THEN: boot into your clean os, enable devicelock and then disable devicelock.

    NOW: Try the tutorial again.

    • Mahlon says:

make sure the name part of the command in step 12 is exactly the same as the file name you downloaded. sometimes the file name is different. Its probably LEGACY_006 now…
      eg… DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin

  32. willco says:

just a warning for anyone thinking of flashing their phones.
i didn’t think the procedure could brick my phone, even if i followed the directions exactly.
but if you’re feeling adventurous, please proceed by all means 🙂

  36. Raqif says:

Has anyone see this? Or can someone lend a helping hand to tell me where I may be going wrong?

Hi, I have tried to do this but without any luck.
After flash, the phone restarts, an i get a warning about that i have changed the phonesoftware. Then I can´t get any further. I cant start up the phone…
    What to do?

    • Oliver Oxtoby says:

I was having the same problem. What worked for me was to first of all re-flash the phone with the complete image:
      flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -f -R
      and then with the kernel:
      flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –flash-only=kernel -f -R

I think this happens if you didn’t do the software update to the latest version of MeeGo.

      Cheers,
      Oliver

PS whats the difference b/n the double-hyphens before “flash”?I mean in some sites (actually all others that I visited) they put 2 hyphens, but here there’s only one.

  51. Henry says:

Never mind my previous post. There must’ve been something wrong with the command (I spent more than 20 minutes trying to find out what was wrong -.-) -I just copy-pasted from here and changed the “005” to “006” but now the problem is
    ERROR: Unknown arguments specified!

for those who end up with phones that don’t boot past the warranty warning:
RELAX! I had this too and all I had to do was re-flash the phone with the latest firmware image and I think it will work for you people too.The mistake I did and I think you guys did too is that you didn’t update your firmware to the latest. So you’re writing the zImage into the phone with a firmware image that isn’t the one the phone is using.(If u don’t understand this never mind).Just search “Comprehensive firmware flashing guide maemotalk” on google and select the page on maemotalk org with instructions for flashing.Follow those and you’ll most probably end up with a phone as good as new -I even had all my old data left-just the apps got uninstalled.Good luck

After Flash my N9 then it is not open and after 5min its restart and again hangup and then again restart but not open. what can i do now? Pls help me

    • discontinuity says:

This means there was a problem.Causes are many, but solution is just one.
Reflash the phone with the latest firmware.Open Navifirm,do the steps in the tutorial, except that don’t download only the “legacy” file, but also the one below it;the “EMMC” one which is also larger in size.Put them in flasher directory. Now I assume u put them in “C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher”.Now open command prompt.Write “cd C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher” (Or the directory u have flasher in).Now write “flasher -i” (ofc u must press Enter after each command)
Next, write “Flasher -f -F (name of “legacy” bin file).bin” (Please don’t use the brackets in the command-write the name of the file which has the word “legacy” in it.If u want,u can copy the name of the file and paste it on the cmd for utmost accuracy)
After finish, write “Flasher -R” and the phone will restart.(Note that u must NOT put the “”s in the commands)
      hope this helped.

      • Rana says:

Would you please eloborate that while applying the cmd commands, phone should be off or on???

        • discontinuity says:

          sry for xtremely late reply.
Phone must be OFF when u plug into the PC.
PS if u have a bricked phone u can’t turn it on anyway-or u’ll just reach the scary warranty loss message and the phone will switch itself off.
guys for clarifications just go to the nitdroid forum and use the searchbox there. Most of ur problems will hopefully be solved.Have a nice day…..perhaps :DD

Hi, how are u, i need your help please. I have Nokia N9 – Black 64 GB with archive: DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_006-OEM1-958_ARM, im living in Middle East and my problem is that im blocked in the step for flashing, when i put zImage in the same folder C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher and open commande prompt, i put this commande:
flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_006-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –flash-only=kernel -f -R, but with no success in flashing, and when i connect my nokia N9 with the cable in computer, there’s the same result, i mean the phone not accept to flash, buu it can run the default OS Meego harmattan only . So i don’t know how to do now, maybe in our zone (Middle East) they block flashing of Nokia, so if u have some informations in order to help me, please post in my text. THANK YOU ALL

    • nico says:

make sure you put 2 “-” sign before the “flash” word in the command

      flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_006-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –-flash-only=kernel -f -R

      • Arsen says:

        hi
you have written there LEGACY_006 and not 005 or 001
is there a difference between that numbers?

      • salum says:

hello nico, it’s me again. First i wanna thank u so much 4 your reply in my text, and thanx again becoz it helped me, and yes, the think that i forget to put is the 2 “-” sign before the “flash”word becoz it cant flash in that case, and now thanx, i succeed to flash the phone with the command you explain to me:
        flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_006-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -k zImage –-flash-only=kernel -f -R
and i follow all the steps, put the nninedroid ics in MyDocs inside the N9, and put the command in the terminal, and switch it off. Everythings’s ok.
But when i switch on the phone and display the warning for warranty, if i press the volume up key or keeping pressing it, there’s nothing happen but just loading the default OS Meego Harmattan for the Nokia N9. So please again help me in my situation, and i don’t know if i must pressing the volume up key once, or twice or just keeping pressing. Or maybe i must reflash it again, with the sillyboot.
Thanx again nico, and please im waiting for your help.

Hello I have a Nokia n8 change the system from Symbian to the system Android Download Terminal program installed on a possible Nokia n8

Possible to access the program Download Terminal

  84. nico says:

Thanks for the instructions, very helpful.

Just to clarify a few things, if someone else has same issues as me (this is for windows 7):
    – step II.2, if you cannot copy the kernel in the C:\Program Files\Nokia\flasher folder, navigate to C:\Program Files\Nokia\, right-click on flasher, select properties, select Security, click on Edit, select “Users (<name-of-your-computer\Users)", click on Full Control and confirm. Then try copying again
    – step II.12, in the instructions replace "DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1_PR_LEGACY_005-OEM1-958_ARM.bin" by the name of the file you have downloaded and copied. Also make sure you put 2 "-" signs before the "flash" word, like this : –flash. In my case (blue n9 Telstra Australia)it gave this : flasher -a DFL61_HARMATTAN_30.2012.07-1.235.3_PR_LEGACY_235_ARM_RM-696_PRD_signed.bin -k zImage –flash-only=kernel -f -R
    – steps III.5 and IV.3, when the article says "copy in the MyDocs folder", copy in the root of the drive that appears when you connect your phone as Usb Mass Storage

    Cheers

I got a problem. Everything works fine, the Meego system works fine, but when i start the phone and press volume up button to boot andriod, the phone just turns off, why is that? Help please

    • discontinuity says:

furkan did u put nitdroid 1 or 2 or 3?(yeah there are 3 versions 3 being the latest)-If u followed these steps and only the steps on this page then I’m not sure of the problem. If u put nitdroid 2 then at first it was released to OVERWRITE the 1st one though later a standalone was released.
To all: If u have queries then why don’t u go to the real nitdroid forum(nitdroid is the name given by the team to android for the N9) and ask them there? They’re better then me,and u might as well cut Mr.David some slack 😀

  102. Jab says:

Hello , it’s possible that someone could transalte the method it will be great for the French communoty

  103. maxbc says:

Another problem to report : I am having issues when the phone empties its battery : when I try to charge it back, it starts to boot, I see the warning and the “Press VolUp for alternative OS”, then, if I press volUp, Android boots fine but is incapable of charging, and if I don’t, the phone turns “off” (or in a weird state where in the dark you can see the screen is actually still on), and in this state it doesn’t charge. Only way to turn it OFF is to press power button for 8 seconds (as always), this brings us back to the initial state.

I tried using the Flasher, it worked once : start the flasher with any OS that won’t work (for example, try to downgrade), flasher will prevent the phone from starting. The first time I did this the phone kept blocked by flasher and started charging.

But now, my problem is even though the flasher blocked the phone from booting, the phone doesn’t charge, so I’m completely stuck with a “dead” phone (it’s not dead, it’s just unable to charge).

Another time, I just did a lot of those manipulations (turn off, plug in, turn off again before boot, plug out, etc.) and maybe the battery charged a little, but I got a boot warning such as :
“The system is not working properly (too many reboots). Boot anyway?” I said yes and the phone booted correctly.

This is very annoying. I would really like to find a way to downgrade (coz I can’t flash my phone, the latest version fw doesn’t exist for my country variant although I got 1.3 FOTA… which is even weirder)

BTW there is an updated version of Ninedroid, and I would like to install it (but since I can’t flash…)

    • David Cogen says:

What version of MeeGo are you on?

      • salum says:

Hello David, really i have the version PR 1.2, but just one thing i wanna tell u that i finish all procedure you explain in order to run android ICS 4.0, all finish. But when i switch on the phone it display the warning for void warranty, and if i press the volume up key or keeping pressing it, there’s nothing happen but just loading after about 15 or 20 seconds the default OS Meego Harmattan for the Nokia N9. So please again help me in my situation, and i don’t know if i must pressing the volume up key once, or twice or just keeping pressing. Or maybe i must reflash it again, with the sillyboot. Another i wanna tell u is that the command u explain:
tar xjvf /home/user/MyDocs/sillyboot.tar.bz2 -C / didn’t work if i put the -C / but if i remove it or i add to it the syntax /home/ it work but never dual boot

        • David Cogen says:

Without the -C it won’t work (that’s why it isn’t booting). Try flashing it again but this time follow it exactly. It’s been a while since I did this to the phone, but I sort of remember having the same issue and it was cause of something small I overlooked.

          • salum says:

Yea i know that it must be the problem of the -C command, but really when i put that -C it display a message like cannot remove something like, but when i remove it or add home/ nothing display, but unfortunately no dual boot, i try many times to reflash the phone maybe about 5 times but with the same problem, -C didn’t work

          • salum says:

or maybe the problem is the french language bcoz my phone is in french, but i don’t think that

flasher -a [name of what i have downloaded with the program with LEGACY etc.].bin -k zImage.pr13 –flash-only=kernel -f -R *hit ENTER*

so yes, everywhere, where a space is you have to tipe this in the cmd. and i had to write after the zImage the .pr13 and the double hyphen (-) before flash
      then it’ll work.
