Samsung promos Galaxy 50 YP-G50, an Android-based Player to Compete with the iPod Touch

Color me impressed but I think I just found an Android replacement for my iPod Touch.  With its impressive spec sheet and usable form factor, we are guessing Samsung has another winner on its hands in the Galaxy series.  The player boasts of Android 2.1 (Eclair) OS, a super 3.2-inch AMOLED (capacitive?) touchscreen display supporting 800×480 resolution, WiFi connectivity, and GPS.  The YP-G50 Galaxy 50 will be available in 8 and 16GB variants and also has a microSD slot to give it a bit more of a memory boost.  The only downside we can see is its 2-megapixel lens, which can be ignored in lieu of its other great features.  The YP-G50 also supports apps from the Android Market and the Samsung store.

If the Galaxy S was an answer to the iPhone, the Galaxy 50 would definitely qualify as an iPod Touch competitor, so feel free to sound out to tell us which you think is better.  As for availability, the media player is available on preorder for $199 (8GB) and $249 (16GB) from a French retailer as of now, but no word on actual availability yet.

  1. As a Rooted Android phone user, and a iPod Touch user. I think having a Android phone, and an Android Pocket PC would be over kill. Just my idea. Maybe iPhone users will get this it pair with their JailBroken iPhones. After all an iPhone & iPod will be just as much overkill. .

  2. This thing isn’t shipping with 2.2? If you wanna compete with the ipod touch there would need to be a better game selection!

    1. this one not going to survive except if it will have android upgrade feature……..G50 should be price more lower like US100 for it 8gb coz the later model 8gb 4inch one should be in US150 to make it 32GB compete with 32GB Ipod Touch 4g………….it would make no sense to make the price of Galaxy 32GB higher than 64GB Ipod Touch 4g

  3. Don’t get me wrong I like Apple products but they seem to be very sleek and over appreciated by people who don’t know what is the real stuff that can be devices like iPod touch. The fact that all people say it is good does not say it is actually good. My opinion is that G50 is absolutely amazing player that may compete with iPod Touch.

  4. It is not on the market yet, so we can only guess about its functionality! Seems like a good player. But sometimes Android applications are very slow or there might be some difficulties in them and they don’t work properly! In my opinion, the most important thing about all those Androidoapple players they must give high quality music and video!! All the rest is for your entertainment!

  8. …I think it is going to be very difficult for G50 to challenge any of Apple products. So far no one saw in real, only talk about it. Why it is not in store yet? Hmm… I don’t know, but so far it is one of the first Android-based players and I am sure they have a big future, just let Samsung develop it in a few years it will be the best!

  10. It would be hard to challenge the iPod Touch that has both the Apple Store and the ease of iTunes to make it a complete solution all from one stable. A standalone Android music player could offer you a rival option, could be much more affordable in price and give you all the Android Market goodies.
