How To: Root the HTC Droid Eris (Unrevoked Method)

I. Before You Begin

1. This is the easiest method available to root.

2. This method will also flash a custom recovery image so you can start flashing ROMs immediately.

3. This should work on all Android versions up to, and including, Android 2.2 (Froyo).

4. Install HTC Sync if you haven’t already THEN Uninstall it (it will leave behind some drivers we need but we need it to not be installed when we do the rooting process).

II. Root and Flash a Custom Recovery Image

1. Download the Unrevoked Rooting App

Unrevoked (Updated 09.20.10)

2. Install the HBoot Drivers: click here and download the drivers and install them manually.

3. Once the drivers are successfully installed, double click the Reflash program to open it.

4. Once the driver is successfully installed, turn off the phone by taking out the battery and putting it back in. Then push power to turn it on and get it to the normal home screen.

5. On your computer, right click the Reflash file and run as administrator. It should open Unrevoked and say “waiting for device”.

6. On your phone, click Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.

7. Plug in your phone into your computer via usb cable. 8. It should automatically locate your phone that is plugged in and you can just follow the prompts to continue. 9. Done! You are rooted and have a custom recovery image!

III. (Optional) Load a Custom ROM

1. Head over to our How To Load a Custom ROM procedure. Big thanks to the Unrevoked Team!

  1. I get to the last step and my computer says can’t load adb? Something about not being able to find the drivers. What do I do? All I really want is to see what you see on the Motorola or LG style phones when you hit the phone tab. Can you help?
    Thanks

  2. Hokay. So I have a droid eris. The unrevoked reflash tool gets to the part where it says waiting for reboot. I reboot the phone several times. Finally I just turn it off then go into system recovery. Then the tool says waiting for system to settle. I reboot regularly then it says, “Communications with phone unexpectedly interupted. Try again.”

  3. i get to the step when you load my eris in the boot screen and plug my phone into the computer through the usb cord, but the hboot usb does not show up on my phone and my pc doesnt even recognize my phone is plugged in. any suggestions

      1. its when i try and install the drivers in step 2, when i plug my phone into the computer initially, the hboot usb does not show on my phone, it stays saying Hboot, and my device manager doesnt recognize that my phone is attached

  4. I did all the steps correctly. I manually installed the drivers in step 2. the unrevoked recovery app does not recognize that my phone is plugged in, even tho the computer does.

  5. I’m having the same problem as Kevin and Jon. I followed the instructions and tried it 3 times, the phone wont display the HBOOT USB option.

  6. when I do the Windows HBOOT driver installation i get the hboot screen after restarting my phone. i plug it in and nothing happens…

  7. Just like the other post here these directions are incomplete for some users. I did get root but only after doing extra research. Please include the directions to manually install the driver at the hboot screen. Also the HTC Sync must be installed first then uninstalled for it to be seen in the unrevoked flasher.

  8. Will this work if I have android version 2.1? I have tried other ways to root my htc eris with no luck. I watched your video and it was very simplified. Also, I’m not to familiar with custom roms, would you be able to assist in some help with learning the how-to’s of custom roms?

  9. I tried to install hboot drivers and it would not work. I booted up my phone holding the vol down button and I can’t get it to boot by usb. What am I doing wrong? I followed the steps to a T. Please help. Also with this rooting is it the actual root, or a leaked root version of 2.1?

  10. hey so i was wondering i know how to root and everything but i heard that there was a leaked 2.1 update which cant be rooted and my phone has the following on it
    2.1
    baseband version= 2.42.01.27
    kernel version = 2.6.29-8a03cb9a
    build number = 2.37.605.4 cl185970 release-key
    software number = 2.37.605.4
    PRI=2.11_002
    PRL= 52011
    ERI= 5
is this version rootable becuase i dont want to brick my phone

  11. I havent even gotten as far as the rest. When I try to download the unrevoked version. I dont get a zipped file. all I get is the last part of the steps. I dont have any of the flash parts or anything else except the last part. Ive tried downloading it several times and still the same.

    1. I too have this same problem, can anybody help with this, or send me to the proper location? I almost went with it as someone else did above, but with my luck I’d brick my phone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

      Thanks

  12. so ive downloaded the drivers but every time i go into boot loader or i hold down the volume down key plues power i cant get into hboot usb only fastboot usb and when im in fastboot usb i see the android 1.0 but when i tried to update the drivers it says that it has the lastest drivers … any help would be nice i have droid eris

    1. go to the android market and look for HTC Eris 1 Click Root App .. after that hold up the volume key and power key it should boot u up to a recovery image after that go to flash.zip and click on the rootme file after that has complited reboot your phone and you should have superuser permissons if you have that that means your rooted

      1. I found the App but when I download it I get a message saying “Installation Unsuccessful” Package File was not signed correctly.

  13. ok guys i found out how to root your droid eris … go to the android app market and look for HTC Eris 1 Click Root App it so simple and so easy and yes it works with the leak and ota 2.1

    1. i just went to the market and searched that, it showed one result and it is volume boost….so um, i dont think so…

    2. i just went to the market and searched that, it showed one result and it is volume boost….so um, i dont think so…

  14. I had the same problem with my eris running droid 2.1. fastboot would say usb but hboot would not. i eventually tried just running the unrevoked program without installing the usb drivers. it worked just fine. it took two tries to install but it did it without a problem. automatically rebooted the phone, etc. Not sure if this was just a fluke. But my device manager wouldnt even show up under other devices other than it saying “device unknown”. The phone is now rooted and i can overclock and clear the cache just fine so far.

  15. when I power down my eris and repower w/ volume down button…plug in usb, i’m not getting the option for the “hboot usb”

    1. try hitting “send” (not the recovery but the other option) it works, you can then do the update for the driver and root the phone

  16. I am able to get through the entire process on my HTC Eris until Unrevoked 3.22 tries to reboot the phone. It then says “Communication with the phone unexpectedly interupted”. Any idea how to fix this problem?

  17. I have the eris running 2.1 and a mac running osx. I downloaded the dmg file to my desktop, transferred it to my phone’s sd card, and followed the process for restarting my phone while pressing the volume down button. When it showed the boot screen, it never said it was searching for the file and no bar showed up on the right. I was able to restart my phone, but the root didn’t go through. Any suggestions???

  18. this is not the easiest way the easiest is right on the market its called eris 1 click root. it’s so simple all tou do is download app open it say agree(press button). reboot. turn off and hold power button and up or down on the volume rocker and go to falsh zip and flash the file andreboot once done and wala.

  19. I couldn’t help but notice the unrevoked method for the legend does not exist anymore, what is the reason for this?
Also can i apply any of these other “unrevoked” rooting how-to’s to my Legend?

  20. I get this error message when I try to load a rom. I have done the unrevoked method and have followed all instructions . I get this message :
    e: can’t open /cache/recovery/command
The wiping of the cache and dat works but it can’t load or recognize any zip files.

    Can someone help me.

  21. hey! my droid eris doesnt turn on, when i press the turn on buttom, it stays where the 3 little guys are in skatebords, it seems like my phone doesnt have OS! i tried this method but it cant load the file… idk what to do, do u know whats my problem or better, how to fix it?

    thnk u!

  22. OK I’m not an idiot and thought the people posting before me just weren’t following step 2. So I went through it and damn sure enough have the same problem. When hitting volume/power, it brings up the screen like you show in the vid but does NOT have that HBOOT USB option below the SIMLOCK. Your phone already shows that before you plug in the phone. How did it get there? If we are supposed to “manually install” it, how do we do this? Do we put it on the SD card and run it or something? The link to the HBOOT USB instructions just says ”
    Download the unrEVOked
modified USB driver and expand it somewhere you will remember.” and nothing further about installed. Please elaborate? 🙁

    1. There is a lot more instructions on the HBoot Driver page then just expand it somewhere. Please check that page again (there’s about 10 other steps after that).

  23. Do not use this method to root your Eris.  This has cause so many problems for people that it should not be attempted.  For the safest and best way to root your Eris, google “universal eris root for dummies”

ClockworkMod does not play well with the Eris in some instances, and has caused some people to brick their phone.  Please use a method that will install Amon_Ra recovery.

  24. the reflash works all the way till the reboot and it says “communications unexpectedly interrupted, try again” any ideas?

  25. Very new to this…1) Which of these ROMS  would you recommend, why?2) After installing new ROM will market, gmail. etc still work? Will I be able to access “paid” applications3) I am assuming that ‘rooting” the device, and flashing the “rom” are separate things, and that “rooting” will not resolve any “issues” with phone, the new ROM will fix the issues..correct?4) Any tips or guidance beyond what is provided on this site would be greatly appropriated…
