How To: Load a Custom ROM on Your Android Phone (After Any One Click Root Methods)

Universal Method Disclaimer: This is a universal method. Feel free to try it but if it does NOT work for you, simply head to our How To section and look for your specific phone to see if we have a different procedure for your device and try that instead. Good luck!

I. Before You Begin

1. YOU MUST HAVE DONE A ONE CLICK ROOT METHOD, LIKE OUR HOW TO ROOT YOUR ANDROID PHONE (SUPERONECLICK) OR Z4ROOT PROCEDURE FIRST, THEN COME TO THIS ONE AND CONTINUE.

2. This procedure will flash a custom recovery image onto your phone, then show you how to use that recovery image to flash custom ROMs.

3. Your phone must be on Android 1.6 or higher as ROM Manager only works on Android 1.6 or higher).

II. Flash a Custom Recovery Image

1. Search the Market on your phone for ROM Manager. Download and install the free version.

2. Open the ROM Manager app and click on Flash Recovery, choose your phone model and wait for it to finish. (You may need to click Allow if Superuser Permissions pops up).

3. After it says success, you have a custom recovery image and can continue.

III. Flash a Custom ROM

1. Head to our Android ROMs section and choose the phone model you have.

2. Click on the ROM you want to download and save the ROM’s .zip file to your computer.

3. Plug in your phone via USB cable and mount the SD card so we can transfer files to it.

4. Copy the ROM’s .zip file to the root of the sd card (NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself) (Do NOT extract the .zip file, leave it as a .zip file).

5. Unplug the phone from the computer.

6. Open ROM Manager and click on Reboot Recovery.

7. Once in the custom recovery image, do a Nandroid backup.

8. Once the backup is done, click Wipe Data / Factory Reset.

9. Once the wipe is complete, select flash .zip from sd card and flash the ROM you put on the sd card.

10. Once it is done, select reboot system now. Enjoy!

IF YOU HAVE TRIED THIS PROCEDURE AND IT STILL DOES NOT WORK, JUST HEAD TO OUR ANDROID HOW TO’S SECTION AND CHOOSE YOUR PHONE TO BE PRESENTED WITH OTHER METHODS THAT WORK ON YOUR SPECIFIC PHONE (THIS IS JUST THE EASIEST SO WORTH A TRY FIRST)!

  2. I keep getting “An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands” error when trying to flash my T-mobile, Mytouch 3g firmware version 1.6

  3. Andy says:

Everything went successfully on the one click boot and the clockwork recovery flash. Yet when I try to boot into clockwork recovery the phone reboots and goes to a black screen screen and power button is unresponsive. It takes a battery pull to reboot into normal operation. trying the normal method to get into recovery (volume down+power) only allows me to get into stock recovery. This is a N1 2.21 frg83. My other N1 was rooted before frg83 and boots into clockwork hmmm..beats me.

    thanks Andy

  4. Awesome, going to try it out right know. Hopefully nothing goes wrong in the process.

Going to load a custom Rom on the My Touch 3G (original ver.) Running 1.6

  5. @Unlockr, I just received an error message when I was trying to flash the recovery image. 🙁

and when I boot into recovery mode, I get an image with the MT3G and an (!) in front of it. Once I press power &home at the same time I get to the Recovery mode.

but instead of the text being green, its blue also with the background image (!).

This is what is being displayed at the bottom of the screen:
    E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command

I have no clue why it’s doing this.

    • TheUnlockr says:

That error at the bottom is normal ignore it.
As for not getting into a custom recovery, means it didn’t flash properly. Go back to rom manager and click flash recovery again, then click reboot into recovery from rom manager.

I just had the same problem; I think I waited too long to click “allow”. I tried again, it worked fine. Maybe this will help.

  8. Would you be able to post an alternate method of flashing a custom recovery as rom manager doesn’t work after rooting android 2.2.1 on the nexus one. I have tried flash both clockworkmod and amon-ra via this method and reverts to the stock recovery.

i am use tmoble g1 an i was flashing the chromatic froyo an first it said error with signature the i toggled it, tried to flash again it said error in zip file?

    • TheUnlockr says:

Generally that means the .zip file is corrupted. Try to either redownload it from whereever you got it and then put it on the sd card and try to flash it again, or try a different ROM (at least if you can flash a different ROM, you know it’s the ROM and not the phone. Try and flash a generic G1 Donut ROM instead of a crazy fancy Froyo ROM just to make sure the G1 can load ROMs).

Jailbreaking my iPod touch was so easy when I had one, but rooting android phones seemed so complicated, but after this one, it is so easy.

Thank you so much for this tutorial and the one click root tutorial.
Also thanks to the developers who created the tools.

Thank you!!! now running 2.2 on my GSM Hero.

Only minor issue was phone froze after booting into recovery, simply:
    – rebooted without SD
    – plugged SD in while phone was on
    – 2nd reboot attempt from RomManager and all was good.

I just used the super one click root method on my Telus HTC hero received the superuser application. I have downloaded the ROM manager v2.5.0.4 and have tried to flash the ClockworkMod Recovery numerous times. The first few times that I did this I got a progress bar filled or almost filled before it said an error occurred when attempting to run privileged commands. Now it does it as soon as I confirm my model. Any suggestions?

  26. wanda says:

Thank you so very much for the easy to follow video. It took me about 30 minutes, once I actually started. I did print the instructions, as well, so that I could read along. I paused the video a few times to be sure I did things correctly. I loaded cyanogen mod 6 on my hero; it is like a new phone! I am glad to be able to customize and make it work the way I want. Just one question, if anyone can answer it-
I had no problem loading the custom rom, but found out that google apps was not included. I found the .zip file for that from cyanogen’s wiki, used rom manager and installed it without a hitch. I just don’t know if there is a way to get back all of the apps I had downloaded previously. Are they somewhere and I don’t know where to look?
I am new to all of this, but follow instructions well. 🙂 Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

when you flash a rom to your phone does it wipe all data like contacts and messages?

  28. jeff says:

does all you data get wiped like txt messages and contacts?

  29. Nathan says:

This worked great, except I have the HTC Desire so I followed through with the Unrevoked.com solution and was able to root my HTC Desire on the Telus Network in Canada. Very easy, I was expecting several steps… just one click after you install the Android Bootloader (which you have to download the files and extract them on your computer first). Thanks for making this easy and pointing out the Unrevoked for this phone.

  30. teknodogg says:

so by using this method do you need to (flash) install from zip…..the latest radio file or any SPL files?

    • TheUnlockr says:

That depends on the phone. If a ROM you want to load on the phone says in the description “MUST flash XXX SPL and Radio” then yes you must flash those things to load a ROM, otherwise, no you don’t have to.

  31. Bob says:

Tried this on my T-mobile G1. Process runs ok, then says Device NOT rooted. Failed.
However, the Superuser icon is in my apps.
I cant un-root, as it says the device does not have superuser!
Now I cant connect to any data services ( web. twitter etc)
Any ideas where to go from here?

    • TheUnlockr says:

Click on How Tos at the top of the site, then Android, then the G1 to root your phone using a different rooting procedure.

As for the data networks, that would have nothing to do with this at all.
Check your APN settings in Settings > Networks> APN and make sure it is correct for your carrier, otherwise restart the phone and see if that fixes it.

      • Matt J. says:

Pleas update the list of phones this unlocker will and will not work with. Surely it is unacceptable to leave the phone in an unusable state after the strong implication that the unlocker will work with it.

        • TheUnlockr says:

It has worked fine for others on the G1.
But if you are having an issue, simply click the link in bold at the bottom of the procedure to be taken to our How To’s page and select the G1 from there to be presented with other rooting procedures for the G1.
(You can also click How To’s at the top of the site, then Android, then the G1)

  32. Bob says:

    Thanks for the swift reply!
Data connection now sorted – take battery out, reboot and its ok.
I still have the Supersuser icon in my apps, and the Un-root does not work. Ive only 3 weeks left on my current contract so Im going to wait til I upgrade to a Desire and then go for a Root properly.

  33. Tony says:

When I tun the ROM Manager, it keeps telling me that the SD card has to be mounted, even though I triple check it to make sure it is mounted. I turned the phone off and on, remounted the card several time, yet I still get the same message. I am on a Sprint HTC Hero. Thanks for your help.

  34. Matt J. says:

I have the same problem with my HTC T-Mobile (US) G1. From the description both here and at xda-developers, it should have just worked. Instead, I got the same failure message you got.

The only thing I have to add to your report is 1) the phone has been unlocked from the carrier lock (so I can use it on AT&T) and 2) I used the ..1.5.1-zip file, not one of the earlier one. Usually the latest is the best, but I didn’t see anything in the xda-developer post explaining the differerence between these several zip files or why he was offering anything other than the latest.

  35. Eric says:

so in Rom Manager, there’s no samsung moment… is there a way around this? a different app? something I’m missing? I hope so 😀

  38. Fredrik says:

Hey guys, I followed all of the steps on the tutorial (properly, I think) and when im doin the last “reboot” step i get into a black screen where the usual “HTC, Quietly brilliant” pops up then everything just stops, cant do anything. I need some help…

  39. Chris says:

I’m on a Sprint HTC Hero, with Android 2.1-update 1.

I’ve successfully rooted the phone using SuperOneClick. After installing ROM Manager, I am unable to flash a recovery image.

I select “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery,” and then confirm my phone model. But then I get the following:

“An error occurred while flashing your memory.”

Any thoughts? Is there a way to do this without using ROM Manager?

  40. Hayley says:

eveytime i go to install the rom i put onto my sd card, it doesn’t show up, but i trasnfered the rom zip fle onto the sd card. what am i doing wrong that its not showing up?

  41. Jorge says:

i keep trying to flash clockworkmod recovery but it says “An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!” i also did the one step superroot thing and everything went ok but at the end of it, it said “Fail! phone was not rooted” but i have the superuser icon on my apps i dont know whats wrong….

  42. Ok for some reason my phone (Motorola Cliq) is not listed in the clockwork thing in “Rom Manager” is there an easier way to load because this seems to be the only method I’ve gotten to work (SuperOneCliq) and other methods are real headaches. I’m real good at following exact directions but every other method just gives me errors and make me want to throw my laptop and my phone lol.

  43. Kristopher A. says:

    It worked!

  44. Ian says:

So, I used the “One Click Root Method” and I got root.
I made a backup, but at the last step of installing a custom rom it fails.
It’s a signature error. But anyways when I try to go back to the backup, the phone (G1) goes to the !-mark
    screen and nothing happens.
How do I go back to my backup?

  45. Dale says:

Hi, thanks for the really really clear and easy instructions to universalise upgrades for the G1… I’ve followed all the instructions and am getting the error message occurred while attempting message and have no idea what to do next. I can see a few people have sorted it out – any clues to how? Is it an issue with the app, the phone or the process?

  46. Steve says:

I have a MT3G with two issues 1 it hangs on boot screen when attempting to go into recovery (flashed theirs and Arman RA’s) never gets to recovery and when booting it reboots once then runs OK.Fine before root, running ota 2.21.

  47. Mike says:

I did the root and installed cyanogen 2.2. now when i turn my phone on i just go to the startup screen with the firework or whatever it is going around in a circle. it does this, then starts again. can i fix this? or is my phone just dead now?

  48. Mo says:

there is no selection for cliq XT…how were the other roms able to flash on to those phones used in the demo videos…?

  49. Tony says:

Everything worked great! Now Im running Cyanogen 6.0.0 Processor maxed out and things are running smooth! THANKS UNLOCKR

All runs perfectly according to direction up until the Reboot from Recovery step. I have tried quite a few times after multiple resets but everytime at this step I get a black screen with an image of a phone and big reg triangle with a ! in the middle of it. (HTC Hero – Sprint) I downgraded, rooted and flashed recovery all according to your guides – any idea what the hang up could be?

    • RelloC says:

Did some more browsing and found someone with same issue that said they fixed the problem by choosing “erase recovery” option in settings that makes it erase the previous version prior to flashing. Now I get hung at the white and green HTC screen indefinitely until I am force to battery pull.

I tried to go back into Rom manager and “Flash Alternative Recovery” which was successful. I then re-flashed the Clockwork Recovery at the top and attempted to once again “Reboot to Recovery” but alas it still hangs on the HTC screen. ANYONE have any thoughts/suggestions?

Flashed CWR in RM and no matter what I try I cannot get my phone to boot to CWR, depending on which version of CWR I choose, I either get stock recovery or just a normal boot. 81. TheUnlockr says:

I’m going to explain this again since people don’t seem to see it at the bottom of the procedure:

“IF YOU HAVE TRIED THIS PROCEDURE AND IT STILL DOES NOT WORK, JUST HEAD TO OUR ANDROID HOW TO’S SECTION AND CHOOSE YOUR PHONE TO BE PRESENTED WITH OTHER ROOTING METHODS THAT WORK ON YOUR SPECIFIC PHONE (THIS IS JUST THE EASIEST SO WORTH A TRY FIRST)!”

In other words, if this doesn’t work, go to the following link and try one of the one’s specific for your device and those work better:

    https://theunlockr.com/how-tos/android-how-tos/

    • KHL says:

well for us Roger HTC Magic, there’s only 8 methods posted and this method is not even about rooting, we all got rooted, it’s the loading custom rom part that we are all stuck on. None of us seems to be able to boot to recovery, and reading that at the bottom procedure at least didn’t help us Rogers HTC Magic. I dun know why you quoted that when all of us are done rooting and on to loading a custom rom. I know this is a free service to those in needs and a courtesy of The Unlockr, but i feel that when a lot of us mention that after 1 click root methods, none of us are able to boot to recovery screen, maybe you guys can actually look into it and if it’s a problem, maybe remove this method so that others will not get stuck like us instead of copying and pasting a quote from the method that we all can see just fine. If you guys look into it and can’t find any problem, kindly make a note somewhere to warn others that it might freeze at recovery screen, instead just doing nothing and watching other ppl complain.

and just on a side note, none of the method about loading custom rom works on roger htc magic, i couldn’t even complete the first step of the only other one “load custom rom” method which is “1. Get into recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn on the phone (if you are not already there)”

      https://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-magic/

  82. KHL says:

well i try replying to TheUnlockr’s comment and apparently it needs to go through an administrative which i dun think will go through.

Anyways, what i wanted to say is, we can all see the quote, but for us Rogers HTC Magic users, there’s only 2 method out of 8 that’s about loading custom rom including this one. And we are all stuck at the recovery screen, and as for the 2nd method, we can’t complete the first step because the first step is “1. Get into recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn on the phone” and besides, your quote is about rooting methods, which most of us are done with and on to loading a custom rom (which we are stuck at). So all i wanted to say is, instead posting a quote that we can all read just fine, why dun you guys look into the method and see if there’s a problem, if there’s a problem remove the method so others won’t use the method and becomes stuck like us. If there’s not a problem u see, post a note saying it might stuck at recovery screen. That way ppl won’t bug you about the problem. I totally understand this is a free service and courtesy of The Unlockr, but as i said, posting a quote that doesn’t even have to do with the problem is just plain useless. If you see multiple of us commenting on the same problem, kindly post a comment saying some as simple as “we are working on it” so that we can see u indeed saw our comment and not just staying invisible. Thank you

    • TheUnlockr says:

Only reason your comment had to go through moderation is because there was a link in it FYI…

Anyway, all the procedures are constantly being worked on, so if you guys mention it doesn’t work, I don’t ignore it, I see it, but I’m not going to say “It’s being worked on” to everyone that posts. Just understand it is definitely being worked on. (I actually will put UPDATED in the top of the procedure with the date it was updated when something major has changed, i.e. support for a new phone).
Also, a lot of issues occur with certain versions of phones (i.e. the Roger’s Magic vs Vodafone Magic vs MyTouch, etc.) so just because it doesn’t work for your phone doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for someone elses.

As for your Magic, I quoted that sentence again so you understand that you need to look around on the site for another method. It has nothing to do with Rooting methods, that link literally lists ALL the procedures on the site.

So your issue is that you can’t flash a recovery image, correct? Did you try these procedures on the site:
      1. https://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/ – see if the FlashRec.apk works on your phone to flash a recovery (you may need to Google around for a Rogers Magic Recovery image and use that instead of the ones in that post).
      2. https://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/ – This one was listed under General Android How To’s in the link I provided…
      3. Also, try ROM Manager from the Market. Download it, and open it, then select Flash Recovery and choose your device.

Good luck, and if any of the above work for you let me know and I’ll put it in the procedure so people can find it.

      • TheUnlockr says:

I just noticed it says “rooting methods” in the link. Guessing that’s why you figured they were rooting methods, eh? lol Changing that now, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

      • KHL says:

Thanks for the clarification and I apologize for being harsh on you on the previous post. I guess I got a little anxious in seeing answers from you guys. Now i will go ahead and try out the methods you posted. Thanks again and good luck solving it.

  83. I am new on this and my only question is after i do a wipe data/factory reset and install the custom rom do i have to do again a google activation screen process on my phone or i can bypass it like on cyanogen after installing a cyanogen i saw u get boot back to the activation screen but u can bypass and go to the main menu of the phone and activate the account via wifi. I just like to know if u can do the same thing on clockworkmod after the phone is rooted and after flashing clockworkmod and doing a wipe data/factory reset and installing a custom rom. I got a t-mobile g1 and don’t have a data plan thats my only issue and thats why i haven’t risk in rooting my g1 cause all the tutorials i saw don’t say if u have to do a google activation or u can bypass it and go straight to the phone main screen reply if u can help thanx.

    Unlockr,
I am having deep trouble with the process. I rooted the phone fine, and everything worked well until reboot into recovery.

I clicked ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery’ for moto milestone, so current recovery sits at 2.5.0.1
then following your steps, I did Reboot into Recovery. Phone restarts, after Motorola sign,

In an instant, there is a phone symbol transfering like a data with a bar filling up below (split second) then /! sign for a split second then restarts again then boots up normally!!!!
This means I can’t access the recovery mode!!! What can I do? This is getting really annoying… please respond!

Any ideas what’s going on and how to fix or go around this situation? I was wondering too if it has anything to do with the fact that I am running the 2.1 version instead of 1.5. I upgraded the other day and was wondering if maybe the new version has built in Safeguards aganinst flashing custom ROMs. I followed your Rooting steps and have Superuser access. 115. So I have an HTC HT-03A japanese Magic. Anyway I try and run the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery but I never get to the part where I get to choose my phone. It show that its busy then it just stops.

The method I use to Root my Phone was the Universal Androot program. The phone rooted fine then I used the Busybox program and installed the Busybox program on my phone. After that I went to the ROM Manger and Fixed the Permissions everything looked good and I rebooted my phone. When I try and Flas ClockworkMod Recovery nothing happens.

    Any info would be helpful.

Tried manually applying ROM flash but the option no longer appears, only allows for update.zip which fails each time since I’m sure its looking for a VZW signature. I followed the steps in the video and downloaded Cyanogen6. I have tried both ClockWorkMod recovery process and Ra’s Recovery process using ROM Manager but it always gets stuck when I tried to back up. After that, I can’t even copy the files in the SD to the PC. Any ideas?

  174. Ewing-03 says:

I’ve read threw both sections for loading a ROM on a vibrant on this site several times. I’m not missing any steps. Here’s what i got.
    Phone: Samsung vibrant / SGH-T959
    Firmware version: 2.2
    Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
    Builder Number: FROYO.UVKA6
    Service provider: T-mobile
Root method used: Super one click root 1.6.3 , it rooted the phone successfully.

I downloaded ROM MANAGER free, from the market, and installed it successfully.

I opened ROM MANAGER, and clicked FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. It does NOT put the UPDATE.zip file on the external SD card. IT puts it on the phone. I copied it to the sd card, I did NOT unzip it, extract it, or alter it in anyways. Simply copied it to the sd card.

I then reopened ROM MANAGER and clicked REBOOT INTO RECOVERY.

The phone rebooted into recovery and gives me these options:

    “reboot system now”
    “reinstall packages”
    “delete all user data”
    “delete cache data”
    “formate internal sd-card”

I select reinstall packages and every time i do i get an error message:
    “E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.”

The ROM i’m trying to flash is Axura2290VE. I did NOT unzip, extract, or alter the ROM zip file in anyway. I simply downloaded it and copied it to my external SD-card. I keep getting that error message i listed above and do not know where to turn for further assistance. I can’t find anything on a good search regarding this exact issue with these exact circumstances. Please shoot me some advice or asssistance please, would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    • Yes, before installin a new ROM you have to do a factory wipe and then flash the new ROM. If you paid for them you can re-download them from the market after signing in to your Gmail account. Just go to market, press menu and go to my apps. That will show all the apps you have purchased and you can re download them. Good luck!

Hi this does not work on htc wildfire it reboots then goes to screen with triangle. Then you push the volume up and hold power it takes you to another menu tried using update using sd card it goes through the motion then says signiture verification failed then stays on that until you just hit reboot then back to sqaure one . I have downgraded this to 2.1 using xtc clip to unlock the boot to s off then i used 1 click root to root the phone and then pretty much folowed the rest of this tutorial. Which you would have to do this for just about any other phone anyway. Any thoughts to get around this would be great and appreciated. Unlockr, I rooted my phone, everything went fine, downloaded the app, did the recovery image, all of that, (and it went smoothly.) I got to the part where you choose the .zip to install, I clicked it to install, at the end it said welcome to cyanogenmod 6.1.0 at the bottom, but did not have the reboot system now at the top, but the same install prompt as before. I didn’t think to hit back because I never saw it in the video or instructions, so I clicked the apply sd card update, it aborted installing (or something like that,) I went and chose the cyanogen zip again, it installed saying “welcome” again, I hit back, clicked reboot system and thought I was good. Phone turned off, buzzed, and the MyTouch green screen came up (I got all excited,) went black, and buzzes back to the green MyTouch screen, over and over. Not sure to pull the battery and try to just turn it on again, or boot into the recovery – backup – factory reset and install the ROM again, or what.

On an original MyTouch 3g froyo, unlocked and off of T-mobile (not sure if that matters,) with the latest version of ROM manager and clockwork recovery, trying to flash CyanogenMod 6.1.0 (all downloaded today.)
